Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Unfortunately, the world cares little for weavers, no matter how rare or range-restricted. The mighty Shoebill.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Because of that, the bird has a manure-like odour and is only hunted by humans for food in times of dire need” [ Source ]. Later, we would be seeing dolphins every day.

Must be a joke, right? Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations. But how about when the Costa Rica conversation involves a birder? What a horror!

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach. If they are hunting you will undoubtedly find out if there are Nankeen Night-herons in the area when they take off. Purple Swamphens.

You could not leave the road due to the flooded land, but there was sufficient room to pull right over and observe the birdlife. Grey Teal roosted around a dam alongside Black-fronted Dotterels and Red-kneed Dotterels and Australian Pratincoles were well-camouflaged amongst the cattle. Brown Falcon 50 kilometres from Broome!
