So my birding buddy who is a botany professor lives on his family’s seven hectares (17 acres), a mere ten minutes’ drive from my house. The south-facing slope was once used to grow corn and graze cattle, but now sports three ecological homes, and is beginning a process of reforestation.
The egret family were represented by the Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and a lone Cattle Egret. Cattle Egret. There were several ducks around the water body and they included Pacific Black Ducks , Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. There were also Australasian Darters and Little Pied Cormorants.
We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. There was an island in the middle of the river and the tall trees held Yellow-billed Spoonbill nests and there were several families within the vicinity.
The Pheasant Coucal family have moved on from the last place that we observed them. Attempting a photograph of the cattle beside the highway was pointless, because you only got photographs of locusts! There have also been White-winged Black Terns amongst them. It did not matter which way you looked there were thousands of locusts.
One guide has been taking care of cattle. With Mercedes, you will be treated like family, and guaranteed to have the trip of a lifetime! Another – raising and selling trout to survive.
We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. A Konso village perched atop a terraced hill.
Bologna La Grassa may revel in the indulgence of its Parma ham, lasagne, and rich, fatty ragùs, and Venice may boast the bounty of the sea, but the rugged, hilly homeland of the ancient Etruscans is undoubtedly cattle country. Of course, a land of beefeaters needs butchers.
Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. The Groove-billed Ani is an odd-looking member of the Cuckoo family. My goal is to answer the question “Which birds could I hope to see with minimal effort, should I visit the beautiful and historic UNESCO World Heritage City of Morelia?”
The Hyacinth Macaw is more than just another pretty face; these birds are social with strong family values. The Hyacinth Macaw doesn’t start a family until it is seven years old. They like to fly in pairs or groups and in the evening they come together in big groups to roost in a favorite ‘dormitory’ tree.
Part of its attraction lies in it being a monotypic bird in the family Hypocoliidae – there are no other bird species in its genus and family. Not because it is rare – it isn’t, just widely scattered and ill-numbered. Or because it is endangered – it isn’t.
While rails are generally described as secretive, the Common Moorhen – also a member of the rail family – certainly is not. Here, nervous Cattle Egrets trying to quit smoking pace restlessly on buffalos. Fine with me – I am always for reducing complexity, whether it makes sense or not.
Then there were a few Hawfinches and two young Black Storks , Little Bittern , Great White Egret , Glossy Ibis , Common Kingfisher , Syrian Woodpecker , Peregrine Falcon , Red-backed Shrike , Lesser Grey Shrike , Collared Flycatcher and a family of Western Yellow Wagtails.
It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched. They’re all named for livestock.
Zamora Estate protects acres of unspoiled habitat within one of the fastest growing sections of San Jose, a holding that has sustained four generations of the Zamora family. In fact, as a testament to the pair’s preternatural gifts as hosts, meals with them and the other guests felt more like special moments among friends and family.
It is one of three species of ani ( Groove-billed and Greater Anis are the other two) and together form a unique branch in the cuckoo family. Large swaths of the Everglades were being drained to make way for cattle ranching, citrus groves, and low density housing that included many overgrown, weedy lots.
We had as our goals spotting the reported Cattle Egret and Blue Grosbeaks and as many shorebirds as could be found in the flooded environs. Driving around the area checking every flooded field was not as productive as we had hoped though we did happen upon a previously reported family of Blue Grosbeak. We were there for the birds!
Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. I have compiled the family trees of both birds below: Ancestry Chart of 1781, born in the wild in Central Florida. And when you see them – as I have recently – they have massive transmitters and color bands on their legs.
At the same lake a total of 104 pairs of Cattle Egrets Bubulcus ibis nested along with two pairs of Black-crowned Night Herons Nycticorax nycticorax , five pairs of Little Egrets Egretta garzetta and three pairs of Squacco Herons Ardeola ralloides. One pair of Little Egrets along with two pairs of Night Herons nested at Kanli dam.
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration. Cattle Egrets have perfected that smudgy look. A happier shrike.
Twelve family accounts have been added. It is 72 pages longer than the first edition. An undisclosed number of family and species accounts have been updated. Nine photographers contributed most of the photographs used to illustrate the family sections, including Richard Crossley, Kevin T. Over 70 range maps were updated.
But I do have rules about whether I can have said to have visited a country, ie does the country “count” which I have inherited from my family, particularly my Dad. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. Generally, I need to have cleared immigration and/or spent some time in the country actually visiting it. Yellow-billed Stork.
What family is it from? They are often found in association with cattle and benefit in much the same way that egrets do. After a very productive day higher on the mountain, Adilei capped out the day by locating a family of the birds which consisted of a mature pair with a grown offspring (probably). Where does it come from?
Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently. millions years ago.
Rabbits are now thriving again after recovering their numbers and the Kent Wildlife Trust has implemented a grazing policy at Queendown Warren, with sheep and cattle, to supplement the rabbits’ efforts. Lepidopterists were concerned that they might not endure see the 21st century.
Last week I introduced you to a family of Radjah Shelducks taking advantage of the channel. Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in. Another significant flock of birds were to be found “caged” in!
The population of parrotlets they studied was located on one of the many huge hatos (cattle ranches) in the Venezuelan llanos, a vast swath of flat flooded savannah in the central third of the country that drains into the Rio Orinoco. This sometimes seems to put pressure on the younger ones to take their first flights too.
Head back to the town of Opovo and ask for the Kod Bobe Restaurant (Chez Boba), a second generation in the same family and the best restaurant in the region. It will take you along the oxbow lake (not used for fish production and the entrance is not restricted) and through a pasture with scattered bushes (there’s no shade).
The pretty village is surrounded by the high hills of the Pennines, so we soon found ourselves driving through a mixture of cattle-grazed pastures and heather moorland, and our next three birds were all waders that depend on the moors for their nesting habitat.
Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split. And we poor birders have to use those names because otherwise no one will know what bird we are checking off our list and bragging about having spotted to fellow birders, bored families, and unimpressed romantic interests.
Fortunately for we humans, placing primates properly phylogenetically in relation to the other mammals requires an act or two of faith at the deeper ends of the family tree, but it is probably true that primates and rodents share a common stock to the exclusion of others, so maybe we are all mice.
Apparently, in some regions where Cattle Egrets do not primarily associate with cattle but with other animals, their name in the local language changes accordingly. So, you would have a “Hippopotamus Egret”, a “Rhinoceros Egret” or an “Elephant Bird” ( source ).
We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie.
On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. Sadly, he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) so I had to content myself with just Burrowing Owls , Monk Parakeets , Loggerhead Shrikes , and Cattle Egrets. We never even got out of the car! Sneakily prepared, that Carlos.
We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). These visits are strictly regulated and the birds are habituated to people, showing no reaction to our presence.
Research indicates that this decline can be tempered by management of cattle grazing practices, preventing growth of shrubs and trees and the invasion of non-native plants. We need to create bridges (and a very happy experience with a local ranching family led us to believe that this is possible). back to the birds.
Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. So, I birded India, land of Indian Peafowl , Saag Paneer (my favorite Indian dish) and Tigers.
It is a family-owned business. Rural practices may specialize in large animal services and make house calls for cattle, horses or sheep. Consequently, Smith knew the sales tool would help when she approached a local animal hospital with a radio branding campaign ad pitch.
We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. Common Sandpiper. Monk Parakeet.
Although a lot of beautiful rainforest was replaced by bananas, cattle pasture, and other ag-lands many years ago, at least we can still enjoy great birding at a number of sites, most of which are easily accessible including Sarapiqui, the most visited site in the lowlands north of San Jose.
During the breeding season, some Cattle Egrets look like teenage girls who have just discovered the existence of make-up, and consequently massively overdo it. But what do I know about the taste preferences of Cattle Egrets. It is probably all downhill from here. What’s next? Identification of subspecies?
The primary reasons for the decline of macaws and parrots are many but habitat loss due to logging; clear cutting for crops and cattle ranching; and capture for the pet trade rank among the most threatening. These threats are further exacerbated by the naturally low reproductive rates of these cavity-nesting birds.
But, as I have mentioned, this was not a birding excursion but a beach vacation with the family and friends, so seeing seabirds was not high on the list of priorities when we planned the trip. Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island.
Of course, it is quite common for human parents to set fire to their family homes in order to keep the adult children from moving back home, but this is not an issue for drongos. When Cattle Egrets go to the local discotheque, they tend to overdo their makeup a bit. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.
