A few days ago, I saw a Yellow Bittern trapped in a fishing device. If you see 50 cattle egrets following a plough on a rice paddy, less so. Striated Heron : Small and known for dropping items on the water surface in order to attract fish. Advice to the species: avoid fish nets. Yellow Bittern : Very small.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. Sure, the occasional Cattle Egret , Northern Mockingbird , or Red-shouldered Hawk can’t help but cross the path of those with eyes to see them, but the area is surprisingly bird-barren for a Florida zip code. I obviously didn’t anticipate a pelagic vibe, but even fish hatcheries can offer excellent birding. Not Sea World.

They perched atop electric poles, on fences, and even on roofs of nearby farm buildings (Point Reyes allows cattle farming), and I soon lost count of how many large raptors we had seen. We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.
