I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. Smooth-billed Anis were relative newcomers as breeders to Florida, having only begun nesting since the 1930s. Of course, I contacted Carlos Sanchez , alleged south Florida birder extraordinaire, to maximize the returns on what time I could spend. From the bulbuls we went in search of another introduced species that has taken to south Florida like home. Let me get out of the car before making me look at birds! What is it with this guy?

Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. So what’s so special about seeing the resident re-introduced Whooping Cranes in Florida? Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. One of the last remaining Whooping Cranes in the non-migratory Florida flock. According to the ABA, they are not countable.

The most famous of these is Cattle Egret , but Masked Duck looked like it might make things interesting for a while and Antillean Nighthawk has more or less staked out a little niche for itself in extreme southern Florida. But as soon as I stepped out of the car, I could not one, but two Cattle Tyrants preening in the trees.
