The Magpie Geese have dispersed from the previous area they were in, because it got too wet. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!? The birds appeared to know they needed to move to and the Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks were flying away from the storm. Magpie Geese on the move.

It could mean venturing outdoors on January First accompanied by a storm of gulls picking through frozen garbage, or meditating on the calls of ducks, geese, and finches during a cold, misty dawn. Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists. Yellow-billed Stork.

There are no longer any Green Pygmy-geese , but there are over one thousand Magpie Geese. In fact there are so many Magpie Geese it does make it hard to establish what else is present. Magpie Geese. Magpie Geese, Intermediate Egrets and Royal Spoonbills. Glossy Ibis, Masked Lapwings and Magpie Geese.

You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies. Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret. At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. Common Kestrels could be seen, too, but were outnumbered by their more gregarious threatened cousins.

One gate had Glossy Ibis, Pied Heron, White-faced Heron, Little Pied Cormorant and Cattle Egrets all roosting together. There were also Purple Swamphens around the edges of the lagoon and Green Pygmy Geese further out. Crocodiles may inhabit the irrigation channels and swimming is not advised! The vast number of meat eaters brake for geese, call the A.S.P.C.A. This physical evidence of properly handled cattle would go a long way toward ensuring healthier meat while lifting the shared burden that comes with consigning millions of animals yearly to a terrifyingly cruel death. I think most would, enthusiastically.

Jan 14 : A business trip to Wetzlar in Hessen allows for some quick roadside birding in the Lahnaue where I am lucky to encounter a fine flock of geese (fine for the deep hinterland) that includes Greater White-fronts and even two Barnacles. In fact the edges beside the highway are being burned to give vehicles more vision beyond the long dry grass as cattle wander freely across the northern parts of Western Australia. We scan through the waterbirds looking for anything obscure and discover four Green Pygmy-geese floating among the ducks.

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.
