The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. We needed countable species! Only one cuckoo?

Munkajarra Wetlands is always a good location for the various duck species and you can expect to observe Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Pacific Black Ducks , Hardheads , Grey Teal and sometimes Radjah Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks. Magpie Geese , Whistling Kite and Cormorants at roost. Purple Swamphens.

There are no longer any Green Pygmy-geese , but there are over one thousand Magpie Geese. In fact there are so many Magpie Geese it does make it hard to establish what else is present. Magpie Geese. Magpie Geese, Intermediate Egrets and Royal Spoonbills. Glossy Ibis, Masked Lapwings and Magpie Geese.

One gate had Glossy Ibis, Pied Heron, White-faced Heron, Little Pied Cormorant and Cattle Egrets all roosting together. Every power line in the area had a Red-backed Kingfisher on it and it would have to be one of the easiest species to see in the agricultural area! Birds roosting on sluice gate. Here we will actually stop for a full day, as there is a 10,000 acre wetland refuge, which should hold several species of gulls, White-fronted Geese and Black Brant, just to name a few. As far as my year’s list, this last weekend netted me 6 more species, putting me at 127 species.

One species we are more likely to find in this area than others is the Varied Sittella. Although there were not a lot of individual species there was a great variety. Boab tree with several Egret species roosting and Whistling Kite nests. Our bush camp was far from quiet, but we know that Australian birds are not quiet species!

I am certainly not complaining though, as a repetitive working routine that will lead to around 500 species a year is better than the working routine I had in the late 2000′s, where seeing more than 250 species a year would have been extraordinary. Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.
