One paper describes them living in the cemeteries of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Apparently, in Europe Bramblings are the species appearing in the largest flocks and are thus “an interesting case study for discussing number estimates” ( source ). Scaly-breasted Munias seem to be fairly eclectic in their choice of habitat.
They belong to the same species like those found back in Europe, Sus scrofa – which inhabits a belt stretching from northern Africa and Europe all the way to Indonesia, but a different subspecies, S.s. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Indian Cormorant Phalacrocorax fuscicollis. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea. Purple Heron Ardea purpurea.
Let’s take Singapore’s Changi International Airport as an example; it is a huge hub airport with large numbers of people passing through in transit to Australia, Indonesia and south-east Asia. Perhaps I have missed my calling. Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport.
I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan.
Other members of the family include the huge Australasian Bittern (a species I have yet to see), the coastal Eastern Reef Egret (hardly difficult since it’s habitat requirements are basically “an island in the Pacific”), and of course the Cattle Egret. They are generally solitary and pretty easy to see in the countryside.
In a funny twist of fate, it seems that 2014 will be much the same as 2012 and 2013 have been, with family trips to somewhere in France and business trips to Indonesia and Kazakhstan. However, I really want to focus more on lifers instead of year birds, particularly in Indonesia. Repetitions, repetitions, repetitons.
35 countries were visited during 2019 , 7 of them ( Belgium , France , Germany , Italy , Thailand , Indonesia and Barbados ) bringing new blood to the Country/Territory/Emirate/Republic/Pricipality/Kingdom/Special Administrative Region list which now stands at 55. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. 02 Dec 2019. 22 Dec 2019.
Visited this month were; Germany , France , Austria, South Africa, Hong Kong, USA, UK, Serbia, Costa Rica, Australia, China, Indonesia , Switzerland and Singapore). The year list has reached 2403 , a boost of 174 and the life list now stands at 3875 after beats’ efforts in Indonesia, South Africa and China added 39 ticks.
