We (we being my friend Ian and Steve from LosAngeles) were a little frantic, thinking we’d never, ever see them again. Favorite Every-Day Bird (Pantanal edition): Our first, very fleeting sight of Guira Cuckoos were fly-bys as we headed out of Alta Floresta towards Cristalino Lodge. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie.
Beset by poaching by cattle ranchers, habitat loss, DDT, and lead poisoning (from consuming shotgun pellets embedded in the condor’s carrion fare), populations of this enormous New World vulture fell into a serious decline in the twentieth century.
Best of all, you can fly here direct from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and LosAngeles. But these Cattle Egrets didn’t seem to mind. We’ve got a huge selection of local handicrafts, hotels, restaurants, night life. The climate is pleasant year-round (it’s 74º F as I write).
And, because of a special family event (see below), I happened to be in LosAngeles County over the Thanksgiving holiday. So, I was excited to read reports in late 2017 of a pair of Whooping Cranes being seen on a cattle farm. I easily spotted the Whooping Cranes in the cattle field.
