The Ranns of Kutch have lower and very salty areas where nothing grows and these higher islands where the soil is less salty, allowing for growth of short, coarse grass and thorny bushes.

Susliks are becoming rarer: they need cattle to graze and keep the grass short. But on modern farms, cattle are being kept indoors and if the pasture becomes overgrown, ground squirrels disappear. Others are chasing each other, some are quarrelling. A few are on sentry duty, standing on their hind legs and watching for eagles.

We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts.
