Lots of the migrant birds are starting to return to Mexico. The real shock came, when at the last minute, I realized that they were not Greater Egrets , nor the smaller Snowy Egrets , but Cattle Egrets – Bubulcus ibis. Despite the still sweltering heat of the Southern Baja Desert, that beautiful time of year has arrived!

I often find myself discussing this subject with my birder friends in other regions of Mexico, when they excitedly comment on seeing a bird that I could see any day, anywhere — or vice versa. Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. The same could happen with U.S. birders, to an even greater degree.

There was the Botteri’s Sparrow giving a larger Canyon Towhee a piece of its mind, on my way into town: The reservoir itself was underwhelming, only offering me a collection of white Egrets (Cattle, Snowy and Great) and a single Great Blue Heron. This was my fourth and final FOY bird for the day.

Especially when I compare it with the other cowbird present in central Mexico, the Brown-headed Cowbird. Its historical year-round range stretches from extreme northwestern Colombia to northern Mexico, with migration into the southwestern United States in the summer. But all this changed with the arrival of Europeans, and their cattle.

The Wild Turkey was used as a food source by Native Americans throughout its range, as far as I know, but in Central Mexico, it was domesticated by horticultural people.

And while all three of our common Egrets ( Great , Snowy , and Cattle ) are to be seen everywhere you look, only the American White Pelicans are as common as the Shovelers and Pintails. Not exactly Big Day numbers, but… For one brief, shining day, eBird listed me as the #10 birder in all of Mexico. How many were there?

The entertainment consisted of a group of 8 Grasshopper Sparrows and Cattle Egret attending to a small herd of – wait for it – cattle. Monterrey may be the most unlikely tourist destination in Mexico, but it is worth a visit. Both the taste and the view were mouthwatering.

Cattle fields surrounded the small town, the cows forming dark silhouettes against the rapidly graying skies. In truth, they breed inland and can even spend a good portion of the winter months on inland, freshwater bodies across the Southeast, Mexico, and California.

And now, in my long-term home of Michoacán, Mexico, we have experienced a one-year drought unlike anything I have seen in my 30 years here. This is a big deal, as this species is traditionally only seen in three places: on the shores of Lakes Pátzcuaro and Cuitzeo in Michoacán, and the Lerma Marsh in Mexico State.

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. These neotropical migrants had just completed a 600-mile nonstop journey across the Gulf of Mexico.

Beset by poaching by cattle ranchers, habitat loss, DDT, and lead poisoning (from consuming shotgun pellets embedded in the condor’s carrion fare), populations of this enormous New World vulture fell into a serious decline in the twentieth century. By any measure, the recovery of the California Condor has been a remarkable success.

The good news is that this summer central Mexico is experiencing its best rains since 2018.

December’s beats found 609 birds after submitting 116 checklists from 8 countries (USA, UK, Costa Rica, China, Mexico, Serbia and Australia). But the beats still managed to add lifers here and there and finished on 4048 after a late flourish from Kai in China and Paul in Mexico.

(I But these Cattle Egrets didn’t seem to mind. As this holiday week advanced and my Wednesday deadline approached, I was torn between two post themes.
