It was our second trip out on this piece of highway this year and sadly the second deceased Barn Owl. Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. Grass Owls are also present in the area, but remain off our bird list.

A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. We have almost forgotten that Manoj has promised us some creatures of the night, when he raised his hand to point at three Mottled Wood Owls right above us, beautiful large Strix owls slightly amused by us.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s. Common Quail , Grey Partridge , Turtle Dove , too.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. It was a big owl.

The Barn Owl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern). Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split.
