Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

Halfway between SouthWild Pantanal and the northern terminus of the Transpantaneira, Pousada Alegre offers slightly more affordable lodging set within a working cattle ranch. There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles. Red-winged Parrots and Red-collared Lorikeets appeared to be constantly on the move. There is ample shade along the banks of the Fitzroy River to sit and enjoy the environment or go for a walk.

In fact the edges beside the highway are being burned to give vehicles more vision beyond the long dry grass as cattle wander freely across the northern parts of Western Australia. As you can see the land is already dry and dusty and the grass is highly combustible. Out of the long dry grass came two, then three and finally six Brown Quail !
