There was the Botteri’s Sparrow giving a larger Canyon Towhee a piece of its mind, on my way into town: The reservoir itself was underwhelming, only offering me a collection of white Egrets (Cattle, Snowy and Great) and a single Great Blue Heron. Of course, not everything interesting is a bird.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. The largest reptile is the Indian Mugger Crocodile. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea.

Hundreds-of-thousands of cattle share the swampy fields with the most exotic reptiles, mammals, fish, birds, insects and humans. Unfortunately this place, like all other biodiverse places in the world, is being destroyed and threaten by us, the needy greedy humans. It is an eye opener which every birder must see before it its gone.

Little Blue and Tricolored Herons , Snowy , Great , and Cattle Egrets , a Laughing Falcon , Black Vultures, Blue-winged Teal , a Wood Stork , a nesting tree of Montezuma Oropendulas , and Ruddy Ground-Doves were just some of the species we saw on our short train ride into the refuge.

An ultimate freshwater predator that for 100 million years felt no need to evolve any further, the Nile crocodile is the largest African reptile by far. Cattle Egret 16. Anyway, since the only croc I had seen in Africa until then was the five foot chap in a pool by the nearby restaurant I desired to see one in its natural surroundings.

We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie. Any suggestions?
