Just two hours from the capital, is situated the Macao Sanctuary, a natural reserve located in the rain forest, in the mountains of the Costa Rican Central Pacific. The birding routes are easily accessible and go through the different micro-ecosystems and different habitats of the sanctuary, finding different species in each of them.

Most of the time was spent in and around Sultanpur, a highly recommended bird sanctuary about 50 km from Delhi. Cattle Egret. Doing what cattle egrets do: communicating with cattle, even though these tend to be somewhat dull conversation partners. Not a great shot, admittedly, but a great-looking bird. Brown Rock Chat.

With almost 1200 species of birds in the Capital Region, the house and roof steadily filled with Egyptian Vultures, Barn Owls, Hornbills, Black Ibis, Cattle Egrets, Steppe Eagles , a multitude of songbirds and pigeons , as well as the occasional cobra or palm squirrel.

In the 21st century the Egyptian Vulture is an extinct species in Serbia; although we do occasionally have one bird in the Uvac Gorge Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and hope that it might form a pair… Ever since I published a note on the unseen species, I wanted to see it – but the bird was nowhere to be found.

A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. In the words of Indian ornithologist Salim Ali, had Gir not been the Lion sanctuary, it would have been termed one of the finest bird sanctuaries in Gujarat. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. 9-mile route that takes you down the prairie uplands and salt marshes that make up much of the Bolivar Sanctuary.

But if the weather were better, I’d surely have loved this secluded sanctuary more. Cattle Egrets dominate the rookery but are joined by Little Blue , Tricolored , and Green Herons , both American night-herons, and at least a couple of Northern Jacana.
