Most of the time was spent in and around Sultanpur, a highly recommended bird sanctuary about 50 km from Delhi. Cattle Egret. Doing what cattle egrets do: communicating with cattle, even though these tend to be somewhat dull conversation partners. Not a great shot, admittedly, but a great-looking bird. Brown Rock Chat.

The Lion Forest of India

A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. In the words of Indian ornithologist Salim Ali, had Gir not been the Lion sanctuary, it would have been termed one of the finest bird sanctuaries in Gujarat. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Two owls and a nightjar!

But if the weather were better, I’d surely have loved this secluded sanctuary more. Cattle Egrets dominate the rookery but are joined by Little Blue , Tricolored , and Green Herons , both American night-herons, and at least a couple of Northern Jacana.
