When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. Cattle Egret has been introduced by humans to Hawaii and the Seychelles.
There was the Botteri’s Sparrow giving a larger Canyon Towhee a piece of its mind, on my way into town: The reservoir itself was underwhelming, only offering me a collection of white Egrets (Cattle, Snowy and Great) and a single Great Blue Heron.
The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are? He’s usually way back from the road, but he feeds from the cattle trough so he sticks around. He likes it there.
White-crowned Sparrow. The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species. White-crowned Sparrows are possible winter sightings where I live in North Carolina, but not at all common, while Savannah Sparrows has been one of my nemesis birds for quite some time.
First, I want to get the invasives out of the way: It is very easy to see House Sparrows and Rock Pigeons in urban areas. Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. ” (Yes, that was a shameless plug!). Eurasian Collared Doves have rapidly colonized our cities and towns in the past 10 years.
In an unhurried half-day of birding, we racked up over 90 species, including killers like Denham’s Bustard , Northern Carmine-throated Bee-eater , and Shelley’s Rufous Sparrow. Mind boggling, I answer! Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle … wow!!
We spotted a Black-throated Sparrow … … and then our guides heard Cassin’s Sparrow calling. The entertainment consisted of a group of 8 Grasshopper Sparrows and Cattle Egret attending to a small herd of – wait for it – cattle. We stopped. Both the taste and the view were mouthwatering.
Yet, 79 checklists were submitted by 8 beats, accounting for 366 species in 5 countries. Yet, 79 checklists were submitted by 8 beats, accounting for 366 species in 5 countries. Yet, 79 checklists were submitted by 8 beats, accounting for 366 species in 5 countries.
On the northern birding calendar, October is a time for sparrows, cool weather, and tired fall leaves. It’s when Orange-crowned Warblers share the Goldenrod with lisping and chirping sparrows, when hardy Yellow-rumped Warblers dominate the Parulid scene. In Costa Rica, the tenth month is when birds pass through in droves.
The Feral Pigeon and the House Sparrow came the day after, when in the lush green oasis of the Sanitas nursery tea garden I noticed the announcement of the next meeting of the Botswana Bird Club. Under that impossibly blue sky of Africa.
The year list remains low, at 1425 but the life list was bolstered this month by Donna’s Antillean Nighthawk and has reached 4069. The year list remains low, at 1425 but the life list was bolstered this month by Donna’s Antillean Nighthawk and has reached 4069.
Mike and Corey attended the 2019 African Birding Expo in the company of African birding legend Herbert Byaruhanga and a slew of international birding professionals.
A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. A second Prairie Falcon just up the road – this one a young male – gave even better, closer looks. It was truly a fantastic bird-of-prey day.
I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Baird’s Sparrow was one of those elusive creatures.
The year list remains sluggish at 1489 , but the life list received a boost from the eBird taxonomy reshuffle and now includes 4076 species. The year list remains sluggish at 1489 , but the life list received a boost from the eBird taxonomy reshuffle and now includes 4076 species.
We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills. Last but not least, there were three species of shrikes, Red-backed , Lesser Grey and at least 2 Masked Shrikes , possibly 2 more, an entire family (not all were showing so well).
Song Sparrow is a genuine rarity in Miami-Dade. This Lincoln’s Sparrow is far more common. Cattle Egret: 133. Clay-colored Sparrow: 1. Savannah Sparrow: 56. Grasshopper Sparrow: 25. Lincoln’s Sparrow: 3. Swamp Sparrow: 44. White-crowned Sparrow: 3. House Sparrow: 129.
Wild birds other than the usual sparrows, starlings, and pigeons find better places to be far from the tourist traps of this well-traveled city. In this, I was absolutely wrong. Orlando, Florida is an ecological blight.
Savannah Sparrows are the most common and I do enjoy their territory song. Cattle wandered this pasture along with me (one cow even attempted to taste my carbon fiber tripod). Although one bird in particular keeps chipping angrily when I set up my chair, scope and thermos. It’s a good strategy for Bobolinks to have.
It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. They’re all named for livestock. The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads.
We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. It’s just that the exceptions are so much more attention-grabbing. So, tentatively, welcome spring and new life.
Whether I am speaking about Henslow’s Sparrows and Upland Sandpipers of the east and Midwest that occupy tall-grass prairies or birds like Ferruginous Hawks and Mountain Plovers of the western short-grass prairies; all deserve our attention. You may say this is cynical, but I consider it logical.
I am also very susceptible to that once-a-year thrill of a House Sparrow or a Eurasian Collared Dove actually meaning something. And while all three of our common Egrets ( Great , Snowy , and Cattle ) are to be seen everywhere you look, only the American White Pelicans are as common as the Shovelers and Pintails. How many were there?
Meadow Pipits are abundant breeding birds on the moors Romaldkirk produced most of the village birds we could expect: there were House Martins and Swifts, Chaffinches and House Sparrows, plus Jackdaws on the church (which dates from Saxon times, more than a thousand years ago).
Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields. So I pulled in as the sun peeked over the horizon and met briefly with the owner, who was wrapping up his own early Saturday morning ritual of packing up goods for the local farmer’s market.
It is a good place to come down to from the city and look for Ostrich, Cape Gannets , Cape Cormorants , Cape Sparrows , Cape Buntings, Cape Sugarbirds, Cape Grassbirds and presumably lots of other birds with cape in the name. Cattle Egret in spring flowers. Cape Mongoose are also easy to see. Greater Flamingos. Strandfontein.
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
Le Conte’s Sparrows “look particularly dapper” from September to March; American Rosefinches “are rabid songsters”; Pelagic Cormorant is “potbellied and long tailed, possessing a very skinny neck and an equally small, fine head.” I myself will be starting with the chapters on Marsh Sparrows.
My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. Spotted Wood-owl. Other highlights might include; Black Baza, Red-legged Crake, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Lineated Barbet, Eastern Crimson Sunbird. Stork-billed Kingfisher. The SMRT station is located close to the north gate.
Check out this image of a Great Egret ( Ardea alba ), Snowy Egret ( Egretta thula ) and Cattle Egret ( Bubulcus ibis ) together. This refuge offers such a wide variety of species, that I wrote a post awhile back showing several species of wading birds in the same location on the auto tour route.
I’m one of those people who thinks all birds are beautiful, from the drab House Sparrow to the pink Roseate Spoonbill. Mountain Bluebird populations initially benefited from clearing land for timber and cattle crazing in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as this led to the open habitat that they prefer.
We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. The grass was in the process of being cut and the birds moved ahead before we managed to photograph them.
It was a gift to be reacquainted with trusty birds of winter like American Tree Sparrow , Dark-eyed Junco , Black-capped Chickadee , along with less reliable ones like Wild Turkey , a Red-necked Grebe bobbing up and down on the harsh waters of Lake Ontario, and a trio of Harlequin Ducks riding the rapids above the falls.
