This year was my third year helping to lead trips at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are? He likes it there.
The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. This deeply weird bird represents the very tip of the spear of Uganda’s wildlife tourism sector, currently considered the country’s largest and most significant export.

What makes this destination so magnificent? Mind boggling, I answer! Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle … wow!!
Miracle upon miracle, I actually ran into my college friend at the visitor center, and now that that logistical snafu was taken care of I could actually focus on where I was and, even better, what wildlife we could see. White-crowned Sparrow. The beauty of traveling lies in the unexpected.
So I packed my binoculars thinking that, even if the trip wouldn’t be as bird-rich as my last trip to the Sunshine State (for the mighty, mighty Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival ), at least a few crackers would wing my way. In this, I was absolutely wrong. Orlando, Florida is an ecological blight.
A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. Images courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A second Prairie Falcon just up the road – this one a young male – gave even better, closer looks.
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.
There has been one for the last couple winters at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, but I don’t think anyone has gotten as close to it as I got to the one at the Queens Zoo. Mallard Complexity About the Author Corey Corey is a New Yorker who has lived most of his life upstate but has spent the last three years in Queens.

I can’t imagine the damage they must inflict upon the native wildlife. Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island. And, of course, there were House Sparrows in town but I didn’t see a single starling the entire time!
But these Cattle Egrets didn’t seem to mind. “Respect this area; it is the home of wildlife. Entry with your pet is forbidden: no dogs; they scare wildlife. Finally, a single Rusty Sparrow insisted on posing for my camera. This is one of my favorite subtropical sparrows, so I’ll close with him/her.
