We have observed huge flocks of Galahs there on previous visits and other times there are more bird species, but only one or two of each species. Walking out onto the bridge we soon observed a good mixture of other bird species. Brolga had come into drink and there were all three species of Ibis present. Cattle Egret.
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. It is often useful to look at satellite images on Google Earth to see where there is suitable habitat for different bird species. When we decided to go to see what bird species there were in the undeveloped areas at Changi Business Park we encountered several species of bird that we did not observe anywhere else in Singapore.
It’s also a good place to pick up some African game if you’re on a quick trip, I saw Bontebok and Eland, two types of antelope, as well as Chamca Baboons, and if you’re lucky you can find Mountain Zebra here too. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris.
We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet. Oriental Pied Hornbill. Yellow-rumped Flycatcher.
The main bird species around the quarry were Zebra Finch , Painted Finch , Spinifex Pigeons , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves. A bush full of Zebra Finch . There have been occasions where there have even been Australasian Grebes at this quarry, but not this time. Water remaining in the quarry this year.
It is often a lot hotter there than closer to the coast and many bird species roost in the area or come in for a drink and bathe during the day. Last Sunday there were plenty of bird species to see and it was easy enough to stand in the shade and watch the birds come in for a drink.
There actually could not have been much less water really, because it was little more than a hoof print full after the last of the cattle gave up on it for a supply of water! Another example of its staggering wealth is the fact that the 22,000 hectare Table Mountain National Park situated within the city of Cape Town has more plant species than the whole of the British Isles or New Zealand! An indication of its floral wealth is that this region covers a mere 0.5%
It spent its visit at the Golf Course with the Masked Lapwings Vanellus miles and the previous visit by the species had been in February 2008 and prior to that September 2005. We have never seen as many Zebra Finches as we have this year and there are a lot more Budgerigars and Diamond Doves in the Broome area. How wrong we were!
Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. One species we are more likely to find in this area than others is the Varied Sittella. The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so. Although there were not a lot of individual species there was a great variety. White-necked Heron.
The year list ends on a provisional (some beats will be birding ’til the final whistle to try and salvage a ravaged year) 1803 species from 1602 checklists submitted by 12 beats from 16 countries. Imagine that, 13 lists per year where once there were only 12.
The beats are famed for their inclusion on the nice side of the ledger and this month 9 of them shared 163 lists from 7 countries (Australia, Costa Rica, USA, UK, Serbia, China and Trinidad and Tobago) and accounted for 735 bird species. Mike doubled up with “smushed”, a new addition to the adjective list.

Thus; As at April 30 th 2017, the collaborative year total stands at 1432 , with 895 species noted this month from 164 shared checklists. 9 beats contributed their sightings (this knocks last April’s efforts of 116 lists for 672 species into a cocked hat and claws back some ground on the 30th April 2016 running total of 1707).
For Borneo I’ll be accepting the split endemic species listed in Myers (2009), some of which I think eBird could at least offer as subspecies options (I’d also welcome an eBird app that works). Species are listed by family according to the order eBird spits them out to me in. Indigo Flycatcher.

Last year they shared over 1200 checklists and managed to achieve a stunning total of 2647 species from 32 countries.
