In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. February 2013. And we are in it.
So, I birded India, land of Indian Peafowl , Saag Paneer (my favorite Indian dish) and Tigers. Well, they were all memorable, but these two involve subjects people have asked about without fail—the Taj Mahal and Tigers. Target: Tigers. Our local Ranthambhore guide told us that a tiger had been located on our route.
Cattle Egret. Tiger Shrike. Similar to the Chinese, birds do not seem to mind eating frogs and toads. Brown Shrike. Rodents seem to be less popular, or less available. Black-winged Kite: Yes, it is a tail. And of course, there are all kinds of insects, spiders, dragonflies, caterpillars, etc.
Cattle Egret … though some of them seem to want to hide (which is really difficult for a white bird). Tiger Shrike. August is a bit of a transition month – from the summer lull at the beginning of the month to the first shorebird migrants a bit later, and the very first migrating passerines at the end of the month.
Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration. Cattle Egrets have perfected that smudgy look. A happier shrike.
We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie.
Although a lot of beautiful rainforest was replaced by bananas, cattle pasture, and other ag-lands many years ago, at least we can still enjoy great birding at a number of sites, most of which are easily accessible including Sarapiqui, the most visited site in the lowlands north of San Jose.
During the breeding season, some Cattle Egrets look like teenage girls who have just discovered the existence of make-up, and consequently massively overdo it. But what do I know about the taste preferences of Cattle Egrets. It is probably all downhill from here. What’s next? Identification of subspecies?
When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects. When Cattle Egrets go to the local discotheque, they tend to overdo their makeup a bit. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.
It’s all very well to advocate the should that tigers should not be poached from a reserve in India. The tigers keep wandering out of their reserve and taking cattle from nearby villages, taking what little these already poor people have. Perhaps it would be better to move the tigers to that bigger reserve, or maybe a zoo.
