Two doves on the wire… Here, I would expect them to be European Turtle-Doves , as opposed to Collared Doves , but they are against the light… until a soft turrr – turrr comes from that direction. Loess bluff with numerous bee-eaters and one Northern Wheatear and, cut into a low grassy ridge, the set of tracks veers right.

The northern half of the lake added Corn Bunting , European Turtle Dove , Dalmatian Pelican , Purple Heron , Eurasian Hobby , Eurasian Golden Oriole , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , and only the first of the several Masked Shrikes of the tour (cover photo by Kostas Papadopoulos).

At the bank of one such small dam, a Softshell Turtle basks in the afternoon sun, while one Oriental Magpie-Robin is searching the water edge. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea. Osprey Pandion haliaetus.

Sure, the occasional Cattle Egret , Northern Mockingbird , or Red-shouldered Hawk can’t help but cross the path of those with eyes to see them, but the area is surprisingly bird-barren for a Florida zip code. My best wild bird of Legoland had to be some kind of heron hunting among the turtles and young alligators in a cypress swamp.

Wood Warblers have a strongly pronounced passage through April; Tawny Pipits , Bluethroats and Savi’s Warblers are back by the first week, and Ortolan Buntings and European Turtle Doves by the second week of April. Common Quail , Grey Partridge , Turtle Dove , too. Glossy Ibises are localized, as well as Griffon Vultures.

Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. What really puzzled me then was a bird.
