Whooping Crane at Joe Overstreet Road

The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are? He’s usually way back from the road, but he feeds from the cattle trough so he sticks around. He likes it there.

Disinterested Gray Langurs await us in the next tree crown; one Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker is searching the branches, while one gorgeous Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher flies by. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2016)

I saw lots of different kinds of woodpeckers this weekend, but that big, honking Pileated always wins out over the others for Best Bird honors. Though Floridians might laugh, the Cattle Egret is Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend. Nature lovers, on the other hand, find time for wildlife watching every weekend. How about you?

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

In the north of the reserve, by the Tadoba Lake, a herd of Chital Deer is grazing, with a familiar sight of Cattle Egrets around them. The best moments… Driving through a poplar plantation, from clearings with young saplings to full grown trees, I heard an Ortolan Bunting singing in the rain and a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling from the tree crowns. The first thing to appear was its yellow bill – a locally rare Cattle Egret !
