Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are exceedingly common here, both in the city and in the countryside. The characteristic calls of the Ladder-backed Woodpecker can be heard anywhere that there aren’t too many people. ” (Yes, that was a shameless plug!).

The best moments… Driving through a poplar plantation, from clearings with young saplings to full grown trees, I heard an Ortolan Bunting singing in the rain and a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling from the tree crowns. The first thing to appear was its yellow bill – a locally rare Cattle Egret !

In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s. Black Woodpeckers are still relatively easy to hear and see.
