The egret family were represented by the Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and a lone Cattle Egret. Cattle Egret. The highlight of the brief stop was seeing not just Zebra Finch dripping down to drink at the dam, but also Star Finch. There were also Australasian Darters and Little Pied Cormorants. Ducks, Ibis and Egrets.

I know it is a bit unfair to this Purple-crested Turaco , but I always wanted to use this Raymond Chandler quotation on a bird: “He wore a two-tone leisure jacket which would have been revolting on a zebra.” Kingfishers – the poor man`s Pittas? Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.
It’s also a good place to pick up some African game if you’re on a quick trip, I saw Bontebok and Eland, two types of antelope, as well as Chamca Baboons, and if you’re lucky you can find Mountain Zebra here too. We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. The grass was in the process of being cut and the birds moved ahead before we managed to photograph them.
The main bird species around the quarry were Zebra Finch , Painted Finch , Spinifex Pigeons , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves. A bush full of Zebra Finch . Cattle have been in the area and so there will be small remaining pools from their hoof prints if rain does not come to the area soon just like last time.
Rufous-throated Honeyeaters , Brown Honeyeaters , Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters , Peaceful Doves , Rainbow Bee-eaters , Whistling Kites , Black Kites , Zebra Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch were all making the most of the water at the borrow pits. There actually could not have been much less water really, because it was little more than a hoof print full after the last of the cattle gave up on it for a supply of water! It was then followed by several Zebra Finch desperate for a drink. Zebra Finch. Quarry landscape. The total water left at the quarry!
Continuing with the topic of singing, apparently, Zebra Doves are highly valued for their singing, particularly in parts of Southern Thailand. The importance of the Zebra Doves ‘ singing is also implied in the Javanese language – apparently, “Zebra Dove” is a Javanese metaphor for a particular vocal type ( source ).
This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. There’s nothing better than coming across a “grader ahead” sign on a gravel road, especially when he has been hard at work for a few days!

We have never seen as many Zebra Finches as we have this year and there are a lot more Budgerigars and Diamond Doves in the Broome area. The four Banded Lapwings were in amongst the cattle at the edge of the road and several Australian Pratincole were also present.
The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so. In fact the edges beside the highway are being burned to give vehicles more vision beyond the long dry grass as cattle wander freely across the northern parts of Western Australia.
Crested Pigeons and Diamond Doves flew across the track in search of water and there were also Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. All of these species need water and will travel to nearby cattle troughs for water, because there is very little in the way of naturally occurring water in the area now. Two distant Pied Honeyeaters.
Brolga , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves , Little Corellas , Zebra Finch , Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Galahs were present early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they came in to drink. Black-fronted Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Willie Wagtails ran along the muddy edges where there was evidence of feral pigs.
