The lagoon outside offered other experiences too. They strolled around like fierce chickens, too young to know any better. I’m appreciating each new bird and experience and am grateful to live in an environment with such varying geography and possibility. I was transfixed. My life list is minuscule but growing every day.

Plus, I mean, it’s a giant chicken-looking thing that’s actually related to ducks… with that kind of identity crisis going on, what’s not to love? Horned Screamer Michael McDonald is a lot like Wile E Coyote and would like to see a Rufous-vented Ground-cuckoo ! My most-desired Brazilian bird?

Usually not one to chicken out, the worried and concerned looks on their faces told me not to ignore the advice. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. My hosts, obviously knowing their countrymen better than I do, strongly advised me not to get out of the car. I can recommend it.

Great Gray Owl taking the bait (photo by Nathalie Fortier) At the end of the experience, she posted her photographs clearly stating that the bird was baited, and leaving the mouse in most photos. One wouldn’t tether a rabbit out to get a shot of a fox or a coyote, or is that somehow different?

There is also an effort to represent all geographic areas of North America, from Eastern Bluebird (below) to Greater Prairie-Chicken to California Scrub-Jay. This is seen nicely in the chickadee portrait, which shows a Black-capped Chickadee, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, and Mountain Chickadee on the same branch, “inspecting everything.”
