When I hear of the plight of some U.S. If birders are willing to spend so much money in the pursuit of birds, it seems some would be willing to spend some on protecting them as well…right?

Here 's a factsheet about petting zoos, which at least in Florida have been a public health threat , to say nothing of the exploitation and suffering of the animals.) require hundreds of pig, cow and chicken corpses? I might be able to nix the petting zoo, and maybe even the pony rides, but the "BBQ" will remain untouched.
And this is partly what’s so disappointing about the message of this book: Herzog amasses the research, and sees and does things that involve tremendous suffering and injustice. So why the hell do you continue to participate in the killing of chickens for food, yet cockfighting is no longer on your list?” You’re right, it is horrible!
This last implies of course an improvement in ethics, as opposed to morality, as I have defined it, unless we already understand 'Do as you would be done by' as applicable to whales, cattle, chickens, and so on, as it is to human beings.
To the Editor: In your July 12 editorial “ A Humane Egg ,” you disparage the modern, sanitary housing systems for egg-laying hens, which have improved chickens’ health and well-being, improved consumer food safety and kept eggs a nutritious and economical staple on kitchen tables and restaurant menus nationwide.
There is thus something profoundly incoherent (and insensitive as well) in the complaint of some animal liberationists that the "natural behavior" of chickens and bobby calves is cruelly frustrated on factory farms. But this is not true of cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens. This is equally true of caged wild animals.
20, 2012 To the Editor: Blake Hurst asserts that “production methods should not cause needless suffering,” but the position he takes does just that. We have a hard enough time figuring out what makes people happy, but chickens? The idea that eggs from free-range chickens are somehow morally superior to other eggs is, frankly, weird.
The reason that the industry is losing the argument is quite simple: There is no ethical justification for causing an animal to suffer unnecessarily. The industry is losing that argument in some segments of society, he said." There is no ethical justification for treating an animal inhumanely for no good reason.
But horses are not cows, pigs or chickens. To the Editor: Why would publicizing the ill treatment of slaughter-bound horses detract from the “undue suffering of other food animals,” as Christa Weil suggests? The issue is not whether slaughtering horses is un-American, but that it is inhumane and wholly unnecessary.
Niman for pasturing the animals to provide all the beef, turkey, chicken and pork eaten in this country? Can anyone in good conscience be complicit with the unnecessary suffering and slaughter of another sentient being? And how much land would be required to contain ranches like the one owned by Ms. Lois Bloom Easton, Conn.,
Baby ducks and chickens s are the mensches of the bird world; they don’t spend all that time sitting there uselessly and constantly demanding attention. I suspect they CAN do this but just refuse to in order to steal parental investment, which is, after all, a very valuable resources. Some birds do this a little.
I know on some level, I think that’s something almost all of us can get behind…no one, except the most callous and cold-hearted of the human race things its fine to torture animals, or deny that they are capable of pain and suffering.
Sentient people recoil at the idea of leg-hold traps, those medieval–torture devices which cause so much pain and suffering before their victims eventually die, are killed, or (very occasionally) are rescued. If people have to use them, I suggest they create a cage of chicken wire and hang the strip inside the cage.”. Here’s why.

When it comes to the legislation ( which may or may not mean anything for dogs and cats ), Cohen sides with the people who recognize that cats and dogs are no different from chickens and geese. Are they any more or less sentient? Are they any more or less part of the mysterious unity of life?
Pros – it’s big, doesn’t look too much like a chicken, tastes good, is found in most of Oz and has some experience of the job. Also, is only found in Queensland, which makes one think it’s probably already suffered enough. I learnt this week that this bird is also known as a bin chicken.

By carrying out a slaughter system that greatly reduces the suffering of chickens, Bell & Evans and Mary’s Chickens show that animal welfare and good business go hand in hand. McDonald’s, are you listening? 25, 2010
It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's cruel. There's no "compassion" in the process.
To kill Violet Rays so I may eat her (or for any other reason other than to relieve her suffering) would be a betrayal, not to mention unnecessary. The same is true for cows, pigs, fishes, turkeys, chickens, buffaloes, sheeps, goats, and many other nonhuman animals whom we call "food."

There are moral reasons to go vegetarian: recognition that it is wrong to contribute to unnecessary animal suffering the injustice of exploiting animals and killing them for no good reason If human have rights, then many nonhuman animals also have rights, and confining and killing these animals for food violates these rights.
Clearly, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, and fish do not consent to being eaten. If they have a right to life because they have a self-concept, they surely also have a right to die and the right to suffer pain in the process if they desire. This, however, is not our world, so I don’t understand the bearing of the question. KBJ: Ditto.
