The Spring Festival – or Chinese New Year – is a big period for traveling in China. While not on the scale of bird migration, it is routinely and somewhat lazily described as the biggest annual migration of humans in the world. Being somewhat allergic to crowds, I usually avoid traveling during the peak of this period.

In China, wherever there is one real tourist attraction (like the Great Wall), the local strategy seems to be to add some fake attractions – replicas of palaces or tombs, amusement parks, shopping centers – in order to maximize the income from tourists.

The load included 173 bear paws, one python skin and the carcass of a pangolin — a type of sticky-tongued, toothless, nocturnal anteater that is a menu item in southern China. Bear paws are also considered a delicacy in southern China where exotic animals are favored by diners despite the impact on populations of endangered species.

One study makes one rather weird and disturbing observation – in China, the number of captive birds has risen faster than can be explained by the breeding of captive birds (more than 1500) alone. Life of a Red-crowned Crane can be difficult.

Birding beyond Brisbane

We did have the good fortune of finding an individually marked Bar-tailed Godwit that was marked in Yalu Jiang Nature Reserve in China last April 15th and was last seen there on May 11th 2012. The other snake was a Carpet Python lying on the trail at Kondalilla Falls. It appears to work very well and the birds were relaxed.
