I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? Let's deconstruct: Legal experts in China are proposing a ban on the eating of dogs and cats. So we went from a ban to a vague statement about the prevention of abuse that clearly doesn't consider slaughter abusive. Or if it's brutal it is necessary. What do you think?

These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat. A good story from China for once. According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets.

Shanghaibirding describes the Brown-headed Thrush as “a scarce passage migrant through northern and central coastal China, including Shanghai” – given that I only saw it once on Tianmashan, that is probably correct, though the date (January 09) seems rather late for a migrant.

Chris from Beijing wasn't able to comment (Animal Person is blocked in China) but he did write me to say he looks forward to Jonathan Safran Foer's sequel to Eating Animals. And when you have people who slaughter animals for a living on your side, in my mind your pro-animal message loses credibility. Not Eating Animals.

And I don't think that converting one person at a time to veganism via my spectacular baking or my blogging is going to make up for the people of China and India rapidly increasing their consumption of animals.
