He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit. He ate through my remaining supply of rats and mice, as well as all my pinkies (hairless, day-old rodents, easily digestible and good for starvation cases). He ate my last quail.

A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

At this stop we also observed Townsend’s Solitaire ( Myadestes townsendi ), Clark’s Nutcracker ( Nucifraga colubiana ) and a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatchs ( Sitta canadensis )… as well as several scurrying Chipmunks. In total we counted seventeen species at the rest stop!

The Eastern Chipmunks sure enjoyed the fact we had a five-year-old and a four-year-old at our campsite. Check out my mom’s blog post where she has a nice shot of my father and I looking at the wood-warblers. This Red-eyed Vireo had just swallowed a very large bug. Well, mostly swallowed a very large bug. There is still some bug to go.

We decided on the relatively easy walk to to Shadow Lake and set out on our mission after Desi first chased off a curious Townsend’s Chipmunk. We had ourselves a bit of a snack and rested for awhile while watching chipmunks and robins and juncos forage in a meadow. It didn’t take too long for a bird to catch my interest.

I haven’t just seen birds, but the most amazing butterflies, red squirrels, chipmunks and even a deer… all surviving in forests so close to so many people. A lone Terek Sandpiper in Busan… they will be waiting for me in the hundreds in Broome! I have had a good time exploring.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. But maybe this will help you triage the situation when you see a baby bird: This is a very young House Wren.

He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Jethro the dog. After I picked Jethro from the Boulder Humane Society and brought him to my mountain home, I knew he was a very special dog. He often tried to approach them as if they were friends.
