I asked her to keep me appraised of her progress.
At some point, perhaps in the middle of class, perhaps after class, perhaps in an email I receive later, this question gets asked: “How do migratory birds not get lost when the Earth’s magnetic field reverses?” ” For years, my answer was this: “Well, maybe a lot of them do, nobody said life was fair.

This particular species is not native to New Zealand (similar to its status in North America). The bird is now bonded to humans and an ambassador to her class and the bird has quite the vocabular y. A European Starling in New Zealand made the news this week.
David Chandler seems to have undertaken to describe the Western Barn Owl from the ground up, as it were, and he manages to pull together vast survey on the species – everything from taxonomy to physiology to diet to reproduction to conservation. In fact, given the packaging, the text is surprisingly heavy on facts and figures.
The brilliant orange coloration and rich, haunting song of the Spot-breasted Oriole ( Icterus pectoralis ) makes this species one of my favorite permanent residents in southeastern Florida, even though it is an introduced exotic. How can an introduced species be a favorite among birders? Don’t they compete with native birds?
Life, Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. From what I read, birds are the class of Aves [feathered, winged, bipedal, warm-blooded, egg-laying and vertebrate animals]. Not quite as straightforward as the class moths and soot scenario, this instead appears to be a response to the high load of heavy metals that a bird can accumulate when living off junk food in the streets or weed seeds grown in vacant lots.
Believe me, Staphylococcus aurea is not the kind of species I would choose to write about on 10,000 Birds. male Hooded Oriole An Iguana, taking advantage of a hole undoubtedly made by a Golden-cheeked Woodpecker I have been photographing birds now for about 10 years, without taking any classes or receiving any training.
I pass over the bridge on my way to class and a Song Sparrow is starting to defend a clump of bushes along the river. That said, I can use ear birding to tell me when something is nearby that I am not familiar with — whether it’s an entirely new bird or a familiar species trying out a new tune is up to my eyes to figure out.
Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. There are few places in the United States where simply driving around can leave you with a list of 30+ species, many of them large and spectacular. Birding in Florida is unique in that so much of that state’s plenty is evident even to the casual observer. I’ve spent the last week in southwest Florida.
World-class surfing, fishing and birding may not seem to go together but in Riviera Nayarit the three pastimes are what draws throngs of visitors every year. I even attended taxonomy classes at university. I also know the field guides I use very well, and I know where to find which bird species in the book. You see, the species in my field guides, as in the vast majority of field guides everywhere, are in taxonomic order. I also love bird identification.
Myers, a professional birding guide in “real life,” summarizes the etymology and history of all common bird names (of bird families and groups, not all 10,000-plus species). The guide covers 265 of Maine’s 461 bird species: common nesting species, common migrants, and wintering birds.
There are no Atlantic Puffins on Hog Island; they live locally only on Eastern Egg Rock, a painstakingly-restored seabird nesting colony which hosts three species of tern (including the endangered Roseate Tern ), Eider Ducks , Black Guillemots , and more, as well as 120 pairs of puffins.

Three evenings a week, I trek exactly 51 minutes from my house or 97 minutes from my office (depending on the day) to the University of West Florida campus in Pensacola for graduate classes in strategic communications. The birds themselves were not any species that would be entirely out of place where I live in North Carolina, but the geography of the peninsula is such that huge numbers of individual birds course southward with the wind at their backs this time of year. Something to work on, I guess. The raptors were great fun, though.
Another thing that helped was taking a nature journalling class. I flip through an old notebook, even ones where I just scribbled a date and a list of species names, and I often find myself being taken back to a given afternoon or at least a season. It’s Proustian, and less fattening than cookies. It’s for me.
I know that you have ever-so-organized birding clubs, with their beginning birdwatching classes, monthly field trips, and (just imagine!)
