Based on his own experiences teaching ornithology to high school students in California, he believes that high school student often just need the spark of an interesting elective class that fills a graduation requirement. In other words, a “spark class” rather than a “spark bird.” And many become birders.

Of course, a person who doesn’t drive, ping-pongs between two states, and has finals in April and new classes every September is not ideally situated to do any kind of Big Year at all. Despite my fraught relationship with listing, there’s always been part of me that loves the idea of a Big Year. ( The nerdy part.)
