Based on his own experiences teaching ornithology to high school students in California, he believes that high school student often just need the spark of an interesting elective class that fills a graduation requirement. In other words, a “spark class” rather than a “spark bird.” And many become birders.

My NRLI fellowship class zipped across the Rodman Reservoir in two air boats, avoiding the submerged tree trunks leftover from the bottomland forest that once grew here. I visited the reservoir to learn about the environmental controversy surrounding the Rodman Dam (to remove, or not to remove), but the birds completely distracted me.

Of course, a person who doesn’t drive, ping-pongs between two states, and has finals in April and new classes every September is not ideally situated to do any kind of Big Year at all. Despite my fraught relationship with listing, there’s always been part of me that loves the idea of a Big Year. ( The nerdy part.)

I am a westerner, so perhaps it is a glorious hotspot, but I’ve never heard Cape Ann, Massachusetts referred to as a world-class birding location. Please note that it’s important to consider the time required for transportation and security procedures when planning your layover birding excursion.

Trouble was, records weighed a ton and were a pain in the back to transport, so along came CDs, which weighed significantly less. Major universities are offering world-class courses to those who want to simply sign in, view or listen in. Though some classes can actually give you credit, for which you’ll have to pay.
