Costa’s Hummingbirds, Gila Woodpeckers , and Hooded Orioles are all nectar eaters, so the hummingbird feeder sees steady traffic all day. The majority of the species are based on a water related existence, like herons, egrets, and sandpipers. The few that are not, are usually hanging around the feeders right out side my office door.

The Golden-tailed Woodpecker shares something with the German flag – it is called golden-tailed even though to me the color of its tail is yellow, not golden. No doubt the woodpecker has similar considerations. I have to admit that I also tend to feel a bit itchy after a long flight in economy class.

Unfortunately, due to the fog in the morning I photographed this Bay Woodpecker , the flame color indicated in the Latin species name pyrrhotis was not that visible. A group of dead but still standing trees… a pecker… an Acorn Woodpecker … one more… and a few more… about ten Acorn Woodpeckers!! Acorn Woodpeckers by Niklas Aronsson. The higher up we went, habitats looked more like mountains of Europe than the tropics. I have never seen that many peckers at the same spot.

The next area was the Pacuare River Gorge, which features Class III and IV rapids. I came with 957, and started to collect my birds like an Acorn Woodpecker collects its nuts. Driving around the bamboo thickets on a small island in the lake, Mercedes spotted it! At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.
