Truth be told, I picked up this week’s beer long before we embarked on this surreal “three-hour tour” we are now collectively enduring. The packaging artwork has changed – last year it was a fluid, thickly-textured portrait of a Eurasian Eagle-Owl ( Bubo bubo ) – but I think the recipe has remained the same.

Anytime I’m shopping in a good local beer shop, I’m always sure to look for any offerings from Collective Arts Brewing. Not only does the Hamilton, Ontario brewery make some great beer, but – as the name suggests – Collective Arts is an enthusiastic supporter of creativity outside of the brewing arts – namely music and visual arts.

These “allegedly artsy” Golden Eagles courtesy of Corey. Fish and Wildlife Service caps at five the number of Golden Eagles that members of the Hopi tribe can collect from neighboring Navajo lands. The Navajo also use eagle feathers as part of rituals, but don’t believe in killing the birds.

And eagles. New Zealand had eagles. Once upon a time there was a much larger forest harrier, Forbes’ Harrier , and the all-time ultimate bird-of-prey, the Haast’s Eagle. This massive eagle, with a wingspan on up to 2.6 metres, was the largest eagle to grace the world, alive or dead.

A Jay of the endemic Cypriot race glaszneri It was in the Botanical Gardens, too, that I watched Red-rumped Swallows collecting mud for their nests ( below ). Eastern Imperial Eagles once bred in the Troodos, but the last birds disappeared over 30 years ago. In 2007, a Bateleur Eagle was seen on Cyprus, the first record for Europe.

Northern Arapahoes Given Right to Kill Eagles for Religious Purposes

A federal government decision to allow a Wyoming tribe to kill two bald eagles for a religious ceremony is a victory for American Indian sovereignty as well as for long-suppressed religious freedoms, the tribe says. The Northern Arapaho decline to say specifically what they will do with the eagles the federal permit allows them to kill.
