Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. It lies adjacent to Nechisar National Park, where the lone wing of the mysterious Nechisar Nightjar was collected in 1990.

There was little movement by the family during the heat of the day except to fly to the shoreline for a drink and to cool their feet. As the tide dropped the birds started to take it in turns to collect food from a nearby reef and it took about 8 minutes for each trip. I jumped and the adults let out an alarm call and one went flat.

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. At the same location it was possible to watch Spotted Shags collecting nesting material and try and get airborne.

On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function. Even collecting one piece after another, I didn’t manage to see the whole picture, but after a lot of effort, I collected enough pieces to ID the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler , only the first of a dozen that will be chock chock chocking from fruiting mulberries. Anaplectes – Red-headed Weaver A male Red-headed Weaver collecting shoots for building his nest. Their nests are also a messy structure due to protective thorns on the outside, but the interior is constructed of softer grasses. The authors pay far less attention to photographing and collecting adult dragonfly specimens. There are many more British species that resemble ours, but belong to different subfamilies or even families. High Brown Frit belongs to the Argynnis family and Variegated Frit is part of the Speyeria family.
