The early threats of guano harvesting and egg collecting have been replaced by the more ominous threats of oil pollution and overfishing of their favorite food source – pilchards. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean.

Despite the last group, this is not merely a collection of just-so stories. When it is caught, it pisses all over itself, so that the fur is unfit to use, even though it could be put to many good applications.&#

The highlight of the weekend was seeing a pair foraging on a beach, searching the sand and tide strands for various morsels like a turnstone, and approaching the dozing New Zealand Fur Seal without the slightest sign of fear. At the same location it was possible to watch Spotted Shags collecting nesting material and try and get airborne.

Wilson’s Storm Petrel Within the storm petrel collective, Black-bellied Storm Petrel migrate northwards through the trawling grounds during the September to October period. Here one is close to the scenically impressive Cape of Good Hope National Park as well as the Boulder’s Coastal Park, home to hundreds of breeding African Penguins.

Pibarot has yet to begin collecting data through testing rodents and he says that a clinical trial in humans is hypothetical at this point - at least a decade of positive results and funding would have to be established first. The research at Laval University is still in the earliest stages.

It’s not fecal material, but parts that are not digestible like fur, bones and the exoskeletons of insects. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections.
