The Yellowthroat group is an odd collection of bird species. The Bahama Yellowthroat lives, well, on a collection of Bahaman islands. The one migratory species, aptly named the Common Yellowthroat , can be seen almost anywhere in North America. Both are marsh-dwelling species.

To make things worse, when we got to the compilation dinner and went through the list with all of the other groups, we learned that no one had seen a wood-rail all day long. In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. At first one, then two more, then one more, and altogether some 6 or 7 dolphins were coming to the surface.

Pairs roost together; juveniles roost with parents, and collectives of several flocks roost together. They sure are cute when you see a group of them fluttering around. Stacks of 6, 8, and 10 birds, and more, roost together in formations of squares, oblongs, triangles, diamonds, wedges, and tiers. What a nice, close knit family!

Puffbacks belong to the bush-shrike family Malaconotidae and this group are called puffbacks due to several of the species forming a habit of puffing out their fluffy white back feathers during display. This is rather a difficult bird to photograph as its a denizen of the canopy and sub-canopy of Africa’s rainforests. Pink-throated Longclaw.

The first Monday out after the festival, I took six people to Las Mesas, because it is almost within the city of Morelia, but offers a wide collection of habitats and species. The very endemic Transvolcanic Jays are almost always seen flying far overhead, in groups of 5-8, while giving their raucous calls.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. I ran back to grab Andrew, and we were soon watching this large jay busily going about its routine of collecting food and flying off (presumably to a nearby nest).
