It lies adjacent to Nechisar National Park, where the lone wing of the mysterious Nechisar Nightjar was collected in 1990. Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant.

You can access it easily on the way to Geikie Gorge by turning to your right towards the Fitzroy River and cross over to the far side to park in the shade of the tall trees. We wandered over to investigate what a Great Bowerbird would collect near the township of Fitzroy Crossing and we were delighted to find quite an assortment of treasures.

About that time, a raptor expert Istvan Ham joined us, and after David and I left to investigate areas closer to the Romanian border, Ham went walking closer to the birds.

So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. If the animal then touches or investigates the mark, it is taken as an indication that the animal perceives the reflected image as an image of itself, rather than of another animal. This one seems to wonder about whether eating flies is the right lifestyle choice though.
