In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state.

The Rufous-collared Sparrow is apparently a common bird in Central and South America, but in Mexico it only occurs in the southernmost state of Chiapas. I think it is the most beautiful sparrow I have ever seen. Even though some say good wildlife photography should not contain manmade elements, I like everything about this photo.

All were started from collected seeds. I have seen some two dozen bird species feeding on this tree: thrushes, finches and siskins, sparrows, thrashers, becards and tityras, chachalacas, vireos, tanagers, buntings, even several warblers and tyrant flycatchers. Apparently, while in Egypt waiting for a boat to return to Germany he collected specimens of the bird which is now named after him. Kittlitz’s Plover is named after Friedrich Heinrich, Freiherr von Kittlitz (1799-1874), a Prussian artist, explorer and naturalist. Never happens to me when I am waiting for a bus.

And also, the AOU officially recognized the new species Bryan’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bryani ), based on a reevaluation of a specimen collected in 1963 in Hawaii. Whether and where Bryan’s Shearwater still survives is unknown. So apparently we almost got an Aztec Dove!
