Anytime I’m shopping in a good local beer shop, I’m always sure to look for any offerings from Collective Arts Brewing. Not only does the Hamilton, Ontario brewery make some great beer, but – as the name suggests – Collective Arts is an enthusiastic supporter of creativity outside of the brewing arts – namely music and visual arts.
Today, along with teams in a few other parts of Costa Rica and elsewhere, I will be birding for a cause, watching birds to help one that only lives in Costa Rica, the Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow. Around the size of a Song Sparrow or Chaffinch , maybe a bit bigger, this mini towhee forages near the ground in dense scrubby vegetation.
The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. Barnes or Matheson Hammock will never produce sightings of any sparrow at all (and if you did, it would be a really good sighting).

I immediately noticed the shop was selling Safe Flight IPA by Kings County Brewers Collective, a beer I desperately wanted to review for Birds and Booze last year but couldn’t find for sale anywhere in Albany. Kings County Brewers Collective: Safe Flight IPA. Good birding and happy drinking! Five out of five feathers (Outstanding).
A final thought: whether you think collective nouns are fascinating or idiotic , the more fundamental question is, why do they exist at all or, rather, how did they come to be? In short, the Birder Murders are getting better and better as they come off the presses, with A Shimmer of Hummingbirds the most dazzling of all — so far.
There was the Botteri’s Sparrow giving a larger Canyon Towhee a piece of its mind, on my way into town: The reservoir itself was underwhelming, only offering me a collection of white Egrets (Cattle, Snowy and Great) and a single Great Blue Heron.
In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state.
The Rufous-collared Sparrow is apparently a common bird in Central and South America, but in Mexico it only occurs in the southernmost state of Chiapas. I think it is the most beautiful sparrow I have ever seen. Even though some say good wildlife photography should not contain manmade elements, I like everything about this photo.
There are, in addition to the Ovenbird , two Yellow-breasted Chats , two Gray Catbirds , and a Lincoln’s Sparrow , all attempting to share Bryant Park with the mass of humanity that crowds the park for ice skating and Christmas shopping this time of year. Ovenbird Seiurus aurocapilla This year though, the Ovenbird has competition.
All were started from collected seeds. Rusty Sparrow. But I want more! Lesser Goldfinch. Golden Vireo.
Corey did just this in this 2011 posting about Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus in New York State. Data collection for the Second Breeding Bird Atlas Project of Pennsylvania took place from 2004 through 2009, roughly twenty years after the first official atlas project, 1983 through 1989. The resulting book, 616 pages in length, 6.4
On a recent family trip to Jones Beach, on New York’s Long Island, I had the opportunity to observe a small flock of gulls bathing, resting, and preening in some shallow brackish water that had collected behind the beach. I need to go find some sparrows or some other species that are really easy to deal with… a.
In that deviant spirit, this week’s beer is Mash Up the Jam, a new dry-hopped sour beer by Collective Arts Brewing of Hamilton, Ontario. If you can advertise beer with Clydesdale horses, bull terriers, and bullfrogs, I don’t see why you can’t use a Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I’m glad that Collective Arts Brewing agrees.
When I reviewed The Warbler Guide back in June, I noted that the one thing that would make this book perfect was an audio collection of the warbler chips and songs illustrated in the book by graphical illustrations called sonograms. I love authors who make good on their promises.
Among our highlights were 5 doves species, a full 9 hummingbirds, 6 herons/egrets, 3 hawks and 2 falcons, 4 woodpeckers, all of 12 Tyrant Flycatchers, 3 vireos, 6 New World Sparrows, 4 New World Orioles in different shades of orange, 16 New World Warblers, 2 tanagers, and 6 grosbeaks and buntings.

Striolated Bunting ( Emberiza srtriolata ) This member of the bunting family (that’s bunting, not sparrow. Sparrows are from the family Passeridae. According to the rather odd and quaint rules for collective terms for birds, groups of Striolated Buntings are called a whole bunch.) A whole bunch coming for a drink.
Webb who provided the species type to the British Museum and who collected birds in Shanghai around 1850, but about whom pretty much nothing else is known. His work is the foundation of the Macaulay Library video collection. Destroy the native prairies and lose Henslow’s Sparrows , Bobolinks , Upland Sandpipers , and Greater Prairie Chickens. Eleven years ago, I noticed that the House Sparrows that nested in our yard were nibbling on the rather pathetic lettuces I had planted; thinking it must be for the water, I put up a birdbath as an alternative. But I should clarify that getting married to her was definitely the result of a plan of mine.
Nevertheless, the one question will remain as to why we toss this habitat aside as if we all collectively made a decision to pick one habitat and dismiss it. And also, the AOU officially recognized the new species Bryan’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bryani ), based on a reevaluation of a specimen collected in 1963 in Hawaii. Whether and where Bryan’s Shearwater still survives is unknown. So apparently we almost got an Aztec Dove!
While I can’t convince myself to be excited about my First-Of-Year House Sparrows , almost anything else is exciting. We had a nice collection of birds of prey for the day. I can’t resist loving my first week of birding each year. There weren’t any Red-tailed Hawks. (I

Also, my all-too-abundant House Sparrows have learned to pull thin, flexible strips off of my bananas’ leaves, which they use to weave their nests. Unfortunately, they are all House Sparrows. Mine are mostly cutting-collected natives. Hummingbirds, and, especially, Orioles love to get nectar from banana flowers!
I ran back to grab Andrew, and we were soon watching this large jay busily going about its routine of collecting food and flying off (presumably to a nearby nest). We all wandered off to different points along the road at this point, and I walked for about half a mile before literally bumping into a vocalizing Purplish-backed Jay.
Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here.
Maybe I’m weird, but there is nothing I like better in a visitor center (aside from clean and comfortable restrooms) than a good taxidermy collection, and Lee Metcalf features a strong entry in this category.
When I checked out the spot I mostly saw a few House Sparrows. A: I don’t use analytics software or collect any user data, but I do keep my eye on the number of weather requests which generally hovers around several hundred a day. Because the checklist had no comments, it was pretty mysterious.
Hearing and seeing a bluebird bring to his mind the process of tapping trees and boiling the sap collected down to syrup. … *From his essay, also called “The Bluebird&# that appeared in his famous collection of nature essays, Wake-Robin. Get yours today!
Once the digiscoping workshop had moved on to Cammann’s Pond Park, where we had a good time digiscoping some cooperative waterfowl, herons, and kingfishers, I received a call from Tom letting me know that he and Gail Benson, another amazing New York birder, had found some Vesper Sparrows at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center.

It is not a handbook, though it approaches species from a collective viewpoint. This may make taxonomic fanatics faint, but it is useful for learning how to differentiate amongst birds that look alike but really aren’t, like sparrows and longspurs, hummingbirds and swifts.
