Eventually, it headed east out of sight and we continued our birding, only to join in a hunt for the kingbird when other birders arrived who wanted to see it. I don’t think we ever saw the second one but the first one twice, as photo comparisons between my sightings seem to show the same individual. So, this was better?

From a birder’s perspective however, this is both a shame and a blessing, as I will show below based on my observations of the species on the island of Java in November. The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. The Brown Prinia is an Asian species with a very peculiar range.

Most likely, all individuals of a given species have very similar genes guiding very similar developmental processes, but produce different results because the plasticity itself is selected for. In particular, birds that hang around with humans who don’t happen to hunt or eat them can become very tame.

Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). One of the primary reasons that these hawks make such excellent falconry birds is because they are one of only two raptor species (the other is the Galapagos Hawk ) that hunt cooperatively.

Yellow-crowned Night Herons have a presence about them when they are hunting that reminds me of Buddhist monks. If “The greatest prayer is patience,&# as the Buddha is alleged to have said, then the comparison is perhaps apt, as nothing embodies patience more than Nyctanassa violacea.

Well, in comparison to many other birds, young ravens leave the nest earlier and are thus more clumsy and helpless when they are found on the ground or on low branches, all by themselves. As a rule of thumb, with quite a number of exceptions, if the species sports feathery ears and is not an eagle-owls, it’s an “Eule“.

The Ashy Tailorbird is a good example of the different perspectives of describing a bird – while the English name focuses on the body of the bird, the Latin species name ruficeps refers to the rufous head. The split makes the bird one of the six species endemic to Sabah, Borneo ( source ), four of which I saw during my week at Sepilok.
