If you have read many of my posts here at 10000 Birds, you may have noticed that much of my research on bird species is derived from Birds of North America Online (BNA), a collaboration of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the American Ornithologists’ Union. South Africa is their steward and have been declared Special Nature Reserves under the South African Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act in 2003, which restricts activities on the islands to research and conservation management. It is still volcanically active with researchers periodically discovering new flows.

My research in the Congo supports this idea. I spent a lot of time with Efe Pygmy hunters in the deep forest, and I spent a certain amount of time either entirely alone or with only one other researcher, this or that American. Part of that research was to document human avoidance by ground mammals, and that was stark and apparent.

We compared alligator body condition in similar habitat with and without wading bird nesting colonies present.
