I took a few shots of the male Calliope Hummer a few years ago, perched next to a male Anna’s Hummingbird ( Calypte anna ) seen in the background here for comparison. and here… that male Anna’s Hummingbird is looking a bit suspicious. He’s moving closer.
Similar comparisons can be made with other bird features such as how their hips work. So this new research is very interesting, and we applaud the scientists for their work. These researchers carried out two different major efforts that in combination advance our understanding of the evolution of the bird beak.
birders are rare, so the recent release of a “ National Survey of Birdwatchers: Nationwide and Flyway Comparisons ” is notable. The DCEs allow researchers to identify respondents’ preferences for specific attributes of birdwatching, and to highlight which attributes respondents value relative to other attributes.” Paul, MN 55108.
By comparison, Bangor University used 1,464 mice and 664 fish, Aberystwyth used 289 cattle, 153 mice and 102 sheep and Swansea used 1,208 fish. Tags: universities animal experimentation UK animal research wales cardiff university.
Not only was it pleasure, it was now that most dignified of activities, Research. The subject begs for facile metaphors and easy comparisons, and rejecting such is one of my favorite hobbies after birding itself. The Magic Hedge in Chicago, of course. Plum Beach in Brooklyn. And my favorite, the iconic Ramble itself.
So comparisons of bill shapes, foot shapes, and the like can certainly stimulate the imagination, but we need rigorous science to explore and synthesize more molecular work, morphological analysis, and biogeographical hypotheses in order to close more gaps in our understanding.
If you have read many of my posts here at 10000 Birds, you may have noticed that much of my research on bird species is derived from Birds of North America Online (BNA), a collaboration of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the American Ornithologists’ Union. This is the male of the species (click on photos for full sized images).
Birding by Impression is a conscious, deliberate method of identifying and recognizing birds based on the study and evaluation of “distinctive structural features and behavioral movements” and comparison with nearby and similar species. So say Kevin T. Gladwell is a good read, but not credible scientific support.
Despite considerable speculation, the evolutionary origins of this species’ remarkable tool behaviour remain largely unknown, not least because no naturally tool-using congeners have yet been identified that would enable informative comparisons. Here we show that another tropical corvid, the ‘Alal? ( Although the ‘Alal?
My research in the Congo supports this idea. I spent a lot of time with Efe Pygmy hunters in the deep forest, and I spent a certain amount of time either entirely alone or with only one other researcher, this or that American. Part of that research was to document human avoidance by ground mammals, and that was stark and apparent.
There is a major difference: the Raptors guides are photographic and the Birds of Prey guides are illustrated with Wheeler’s paintings, over 1,000 images in each guide, organized with logical precision for reference, research, and comparison, with a self-evident side benefit–the portrayal of the beauty of raptors.
Previous research has shown that wading bird nesting colonies could provide substantial food for alligators in the form of dropped chicks. We compared alligator body condition in similar habitat with and without wading bird nesting colonies present. This concept should be added to future sci fi constructions of ancient times or lost worlds!
Species accounts have been moved so that similar and/or regional species are on the same page, allowing for easier comparisons and less time spent flicking between pages. Taxonomy follows an integrative approach based on bioacoustics, genomics and morphology, often based on the authors’ own peer-reviewed systematic work in the region.
Matt Young (may6 at cornell.edu) at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology will identify types if you send him your recordings and this will help with his ongoing research. Greaters are larger, browner, longer tailed, and bigger billed in direct comparison with “Southerns.” ” Watch for redpolls in weedy fields. HOARY REDPOLL.
An impressive combination of research and artwork, combined with a pragmatic organization aimed towards quick identification, and education, Baby Bird Identification extends the frontiers of bird identification guides and is an important contribution to wildlife rehabilitation literature.
The B2B Buying Experience and Overcoming Objections New research from Dentsu underscores just how much the B2B buying experience has changed in recent years. In comparison, the B2B buying process is rarely linear. These numbers confirm the Dentsu research which found that buyers are looking for a good brand.
I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. These chimps are healthy and well-fed.
(SOPI) is the leading ornithological organization and it performs research, education, and outreach. Much of the research regarding Caribbean ecology and ornithology has been conducted in Puerto Rico. Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere.
Below is a quotation directly from this paper by the Monitor Conservation Research Society: “Trade data from the range countries of Thailand and Vietnam and from Indonesia and USA, both non-range countries, revealed 10,841 Black-throated Laughingthrushes in trade, across 762 visits to 51 markets between 1966 and 2019.
A PhD student was presenting her research into the population in Westland, the relic population of Grey Duck. It’s a very unfair comparison, but it can be hard to explain, in layman’s terms, what is being lost. I mentioned 2008 as the year I became aware of the issue. The news wasn’t good.
Comparisons are depicted amongst the different species, showing difference in size and shape; identification points are specific, ranging from the wrinkled skin on the head of the Sperm Whale to the columnar blow of the Blue Whale. I found this all out on websites not affiliated with this book.
The birding process is stripped to the essentials without losing the significance of important, sometimes complex ideas—migration, habitat, research, documentation, community. The focus is on learning by doing, with 12 Activity sections integrated within the eleven (ten plus a “bonus”) chapters. of Natural Resources and by Nate.
She does, and her narrative serves as a role model for how to write about birds simply and knowledgeably; informing birds’ family stories with scientific facts and research findings. The research, much of the time, doesn’t support the conventional wisdom (which is not to say the case is closed on any issue). You’re right, it is horrible!
Within families, the species are arranged less taxonomically and more in line with “design and space considerations,” (Introduction), and on the plates themselves, species are arranged to facilitate comparison. So, I did some visual comparisons. Text is on the left, plates are on the right. Do I need new glasses?
Regarding accusations of anthropomorphism (which arise frequently and did in Bekoff's previous book, as well) and also evolutionary continuity, which provides for symmetry in comparisons, the authors write: "It isn't that we set out looking for humanlike traits in animals and hope to find some.
This makes researching a species much more time consuming than it should be. You’re not going to find composite comparison photos of Roseate, Common, and Forster’s Terns in flight in your typical field guide. You need to either browse through the Species Accounts or search the index by the exact name of the species.
Research your audience’s challenges and position yourself as a potential solution (without being a hard seller ). This is where storytelling, easy comparisons, and the ability to explain as though you’re talking to a 5-year-old really pay off. However, if he's more interested in desert plants, then the message isn’t relevant.
The research, completed in 2003, details how happiness extends up to three degrees of separation (for example, to the friends of one’s friends’ friends). What sales managers can do, part II: Be careful with peer comparisons. What sales managers can do, part I: Be the person you want your reps to be. But that’s not what really happens.

Way back when I started what turned out to be my thesis research (on humans), it became important for me to learn about bird migration. I was involved in the study of human movement and navigation on land, and there was a lot of research coming out about bird navigation. That’s because the two are related.
This is a delightful book, large (8-1/2 by 11 inches), filled with Sibley’s distinctive artwork and an organized potpourri of research-based stories about the science behind bird’s lives. copyright @2020 by David A llen Sibley.
