Compassion in World Farming led an undercover investigation that showed illegal tail docking and poor attempts at pig enrichment on factory farms, in violation of EU law. It really sucks to be a factory farm pig in Europe. And I do not see any bird either, it was only my bird-compass telling me this is a place to stop. It is the largest woodpecker in Europe (to describe its size, I’ll tell you that Goldeneyes breed in the holes this pecker makes). Although the soil is visibly moist, there is no water flowing now.

I understand the rationale behind it, but it’s still sad.

In an incredible juxtaposition to the fanfare of Barbaro, more than 100,000 horses were slaughtered last year in the United States and shipped to Europe and Japan for human consumption. Each one of these animals suffered extreme cruel and inhumane conditions in the transportation and slaughter process.

It’s likely that people in Europe began associating the robin with midwinter long before there was ever a Christmas to celebrate. In any case, the sacrifice and compassion of this crimson-breasted songbird amidst so much Bibilical bloodletting and strikingly ironic for a bird that so readily engages in gory quarrels with its own kind.
