One day about 10 years ago, I was in the process of transporting quite a few dogs to a rescue from a high kill shelter. They shared with me that they have the ability to sense our emotions and feelings.
In fact, both books glorify small farms (though Foer is more selective), and both have the support of people who create and kill animals. It's okay to produce animals to use them and then kill them (or kill them to use their parts as food). There is nothing inherently unjust about viewing sentient nonhumans as commodities.
Anyone who challenged w's environmental policies as too liberal is a true hater of anything she can't eat or kill for fur. The traditional (some say stereotypical) qualities of compassion, cooperation, empathy, and intuition are missing. Sorry, but it's how I feel. Fighting to maintain the integrity of the words humane, love, euthanasia or compassion, is also fighting for animals. But I have to think about which words I focus on, and whether they're going to help me in my quest to get more people to stop killing nonhuman animals/having them killed when they don't need to.
When it comes to believers, I agree with Phelps that all religious traditions have some kind of basis for mercy or compassion or relieving suffering that we can use in our advocacy. Far more than any Judeo-Christian tradition, these individuals whose lives are governed by karma, choose to have someone create and kill animals for them to eat.
The animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing has created a new website to bring attention to the fact that Morningstar Farms continues to use "battery eggs" from caged birds in their products.
