On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts. Thanks for visiting!

Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. They might eat it if they have to but it can sometimes keep those species away too. I’m just beginning to use a feeder and am surprised by how quickly the House Sparrows seem to decimate it. I’ll try these techniques out!

We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. Especially of all the species that had been introduced to the US. Maybe because I don’t see so many of them.

Today we are looking at two species that can be difficult to separate under typical field conditions. I tried on a purist attitude and chose not to ID the species. This species is not only usually the earliest, but the most common. What’s remarkable about this species is what we don’t see here: the extremely long migration that this species makes, with some individuals traveling from Sub-Saharan Africa to Greenland and back every year. Thanks for visiting!

When I began birding with people from parts farther north I became familiar with the term “ Half Hardy “, which refers to those species of birds who are generally present in small numbers during mild winters, but usually can’t handle the rough patches of extreme cold temperatures and snow that are less frequent.

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. Hundreds of riotously colored birds representing 14 species of macaws and parrots flock and frolic together in less than fifty meters of forest canopy.

Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. And, if you don’t get Eastern Phoebe or if they winter, what species do you use as your sure sign that spring has arrived? I think that both are correct, but the eastern phoebe usually only passes through the NYC area during spring, while tree sparrows nest here and stay over summer.
