Last week a mystery bird from NewJersey rightly caused a fair bit of confusion among birders of the Garden State and beyond. NewJersey mystery sparrow. The bird was a sparrow, that much was clear, but it didn’t seem to fit any of the easily boxes the other North American sparrows can be fairly easily sorted into.
Here in New York State Snowy Owls have been reported in more than ten counties, with most of those counties having birds being seen in multiple locations.
You see, like many other neighborhoods in and around New York City, Howard Beach has a significant population of Monk Parakeets , a South American parrot species that has adapted well to life in New York City, Chicago, NewJersey, Connecticut, Florida, and Texas after having escaping or being released from captivity.
Here is the updated eBird heat map: Unsurprisingly for a site founded and run by two New Yorkers, the Empire State still boasts the highest number of species (363, up from 316). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.
Listed as a Species of Special Concern in New York and as threatened or endangered in Connecticut, NewJersey, and Massachusetts, Poocetes gramineus is in trouble in the northeastern United States and, considering the decline shown in Ontario’s second breeding bird atlas, in eastern Canada as well.*
Have you learned anything new lately? The best birds of my weekend were Double-crested Cormorants winging over NewJersey’s Meadowlands as I left Sunday’s Giants game. Corey’s BBOTW was an Orange-crowned Warbler at the Quaker Ridge Hawkwatch in Greenwich, Connecticut. How about you?

I have not heard any reports of Monk Parakeets at bird feeders in New York City, or in NewJersey, where they have a colony in Edgewater, Bergen County.) The question is why these natives of rural areas in southern South America (east of the Andes) have been so spectacularly successful in establishing their colonies.
Connecticut. NewJersey. As a popular game bird, the Ring-necked Pheasant seems to have such high importance in the US that there are several papers just discussing the species in individual US states. Examples: California. North Dakota. Rhode Island. South Dakota. Washington. Wisconsin.
Be aware of areas where Lyme disease (a common tick-borne illness) is prevalent: the eastern coastal states and the north central states, especially parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, NewJersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin and northern California. Ticks must be removed properly.
