Unfortunately for the hunters these were already all extinct, and with the introduction of cats, rats, stoats and the like the only upland game bird, the New Zealand Quail , was fast on the way out too. Conservation, as I have observed before, is interested in protecting the population and the ecosystem over the individual.

This almost certainly can be argued to be true just on the basis of logic, because feral Cats are proficient hunters and are entirely out of ecological place. For the same reason that other invasive do better than the natives, feral Cats outhunt native predators, and native prey are not as protected against them.

Lerps are the carbohydrate rich protective shells exuded by tiny bugs (hermipteras) that suck sugars out of the leaves of eucalypts. Their stubby bills make them efficient at this, and unlike their insect hunting thornbill relatives, they are fairly sedentary hunters, content to take insects off leaves without chasing after them.
