What’s even more frustrating is when animal rights people learn of plans to cull nonnative species. Yes, of course it is too bad that so many animals (most often rats, mice and rabbits) have to be killed. The logic of this is ridiculous.

This was proposed as an example of what we now call “stabilizing selection” … variation is constantly introduced into populations, but every now and then “selective forces” culls the variation out. As you know, a lot of birds are killed in the U.S. If so, the frequency of road kill should decline over time.

Of course, injured animals have a very difficult time making it in the wild. After all, what good is getting a kill if in doing the killing the predator is injured? Peregrine Falcons are excellent at culling the weak. From a symbol (to me) of resilience to a falcon’s plaything in a few hours.

The latter is even captured in a somewhat gruesome video , in which the hornbill plucks a caged bird out of its cage and kills and eats it. At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. Of course, their own mother is not the only threat to Wreathed Hornbill individuals.

The killing of Cecil was equated with murder, a moral crime rather than a symptom of a ecological problem. And culls of Nyala have been proposed. This is of course an anathema for many in the animal rights camp. But the story wasn’t really one about conservation. But that isn’t one of the options. To a point.

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). However, the above rationalization does not directly address the issue of contributing to the unnecessary killing of a conscious sentient being.
