It is a bit of an outsider in the bulbul family, being only one of two bulbuls in the genus Spizixos (“chirping bulbul” – a bit strange as many other bulbuls including the omnipresent Light-vented Bulbul also chirp a lot). The Collared Finchbill is a bulbul, even though the name does not state this directly.

In my imagination, the job of a male Australian Brush Turkey is pretty similar – removing or adding bits and pieces to his pile of rotting vegetation in order to get the right temperature to incubate the eggs buried underneath to hatch. We have recently come across several Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles families around Broome. They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days. Last weekend we went by vehicle to check on the Pied Oystercatchers that breed along that stretch of beach and there has been continued egg loss over the past few weeks.
