I am so sick of the feral cat colonies that infest so many locations that I like to bird. And while I am sick of the cat colonies I am even more sick of the deluded people who believe that by feeding feral cats they are somehow helping them. Of course, the deluded folks just spin and lie and make stuff up.
What can be done to solve the intractable problem of wildlife and feral cats? Peter, who lives in New York State, noticed two feral cats living near his house. Of course there was a settling-in period. Peter, who loves cats, has saved two of them from the normally short and brutal life of a feral cat. Ask Peter Paonessa.
This would be a night drive, cold, dark, uncomfortable seats, loud engine in the giant 26-seater truck, scanning the brush and the roadside with three or four strong spotlights wrangled by volunteers among the nature-loving tourists, and of course, the headlights of the truck. And, of course, something interesting came along.
We can, of course, count wild, native, species. Of course, there are a lot more rules that apply to both birds that can and can’t be counted, and one of the most entertaining ways to get a bunch of birders to make a Facebook discussion thread go on forever is to innocently ask a question about some esoteric aspect of listing rules.
The misconception was revealed on a bigger screen when I got home and I saw that what I had taken to be his fingers were the spread primaries of a pigeon (or Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon) if you are looking for an easy tick). It came about when Wakim arrived on his motorbike carrying two large sacks of corn.
Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. Of course, this is the military, so why should they be any better than humanity in general?) It is their belief, he said, that rendering most of the feral cats sexually inactive will humanely decrease their numbers. ‘‘The
On 14 March, 2013, the Orlando Sentinel published an opinion piece by Ted Williams under the headline “Trap, neuter, return programs make feral-cat problem worse.” Then he gave a couple of alternative solutions to the feral cat problem: There are two effective, humane alternatives to the cat hell of TNR. ” Wait, what?
And, of course, some birds are always at Bryant Park. Feral Pigeons and House Sparrows are in the park year-round in numbers. Though it is getting colder and fall migration is essentially over, I still spend fifteen to twenty minutes in Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan on my way to work, just to see what is still around.
By far the most commonly seen bird on most of the islands in the region – and the only one every islander can identify on call – is Gallus gallus (the feral chicken). Can we find a suitable island free from feral predators that would devastate the introduced species? There are any number of concerns one could raise.
Of course they have nothing to do with the quality or knowledge of a birder since they are primarily a function of a) dedication b) time c) money and d) a good internet connection. Then of course there is the issue of taxonomic changes, most significantly splits, that makes it difficult to compare year list totals from different years.
Thanks to a relatively feral childhood I have been left immune to the power of poetry, so I shall dismiss the poetry (a form of art comparable at best to interpretive dance) with a simple dismissive wave of the hand. They are birds at their most composed, soaring effortlessly on thermals across the sky, and birds at their most feral.
But of course, you can skip them when getting near the end of this post – though that will mean not using your knowledge and skills to help Afghan women. And of course, there is a large number of Rock Doves (feral), particularly near one particular mosque. Oh god, I sound like the Pope now.
In addition to historic habitat loss and hunting, Nenes face introduced predators such as mongoose and feral cats. They are hit by cars on roadways, and face the scariest danger of all: errant golf balls on courses where they like to feed. Still, these geese face significant population threats.
And so, when Salvador Ramirez left, there were feral goats on the island of San Clemente, the southernmost of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. And so, a man named Salvador Ramirez brought a small herd of goats from Santa Catalina Island where he was to San Clemente Island where he went to live.
These waste water treatment plants offer the perfect environment to bird-life due to the fact that water is constantly available and is fenced for further protection from feral animals. Broome Poo Ponds maintain the golf course greens as well as keep a lot of Plumed Whistling-Ducks happy! Happy ducks in Broome in June!
My award-winning picture of a Feral Pigeon was of course taken in Rotterdam. You won’t be adding “ticks” to your list of lifers but you would be able to see a pair of Great Crested Grebe care for their young up close and personal. While enjoying a cold beer or a hot coffee.
” But the Feral Pigeon has much about it that should be admired. Of course, this isn’t the only time we here at 10,000 Birds have defended the pigeon. They are survivors, able to exist in urban centers, farm fields, and almost anywhere in between. Look, a near-albino! Embrace the pigeon.
It isn’t a very promising park, to be sure – it’s loaded with art, and everyone knows that birds hate art, or maybe they hate the feral cats that live under the art (probably the latter.) So when I noticed that Socrates Sculpture Park had never had a single eBird checklist submitted, I decided to fix that.
Of course, there’s no such thing as a truly free market and even the natural world is subject to regulation. – Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand – The Cattle Egret Expansion – Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere) – It’s a Myth – Isn’t It?
One pair have already returned to the nest site and will no doubt lay a further clutch of eggs in due course. The animal is most likely a feral cat along that stretch of beach, but we also can’t discount a feral fox having encountered a dead one close to Broome recently. Animal prints leading to and from a raided nest.
Yes, of course it is too bad that so many animals (most often rats, mice and rabbits) have to be killed. Instead of embracing these fantastic programs, a typical reaction from people within the animal rights movement is to condemn and protest the act, because animals were going to die. The logic of this is ridiculous.
They had to close their Poo Ponds to tourists/birders recently due to a feral dog problem, but this has been addressed and access is now possible. Of course there are always warnings! With all the rain we have had the birds are spread across the whole continent and Alice Springs has had some amazing records recently.
Also, in relatively natural, or wild, lands in much of the US the feral cat population will be limited by a healthy wild predator population. About 15 million birds are killed annually by hunters, and of course this is distributed among a very small number of species.
Which of course is the perfect transition to that bird, the Common Myna. In a nationwide survey in 2005, the Australian public rated the common myna as the most significant pest, beating contenders such as the cane toad, the European rabbit, and feral cat ( source ). Well, a better transition than what I usually manage.
The first looked very similar to a Mourning Dove , which of course can be found across the United States. Comical with their green feathers and unique faces, they have established feral populations in cities across the country since their accidental release in the 1960’s. I have always wanted to see a Monk Parakeet.
Of course, the CBC has sexier abbreviation: with the IWC (or iWC?) One odd flock of Feral Pigeons above an arable field under deep snow – nothing for them to eat there, but I didn’t give them the attention they deserve and only a few hours later realised that they actually were Stock Doves. My mind, at least.
They have this particular package in rural and urban low-income areas and will allow people to bring ferals from not-so-low-income areas because they're providing a much-needed service to the community. She has brought over a dozen cats there in just two weeks, 11 of whom were pregnant. Can you imagine?
Of course, only thirty minutes later I saw my second roadrunner, this time standing on a lawn adjacent to a busy street! Car collisions, feral cats, and run-ins with hunters also cause problems, even for this speed-racer. It was large, almost two feet long with a tan look that matched the meadow grasses.
Not to be confused with Little Girl, of course. I've written about the much-maligned Muscovy ducks before , and at our old house this time of year I was usually inundated with rescue situations and of course my patio often had images like this. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds.
Every March, hope springs anew that I’ll cross paths with one of these feral fluffballs, but as April ends, so do another year’s delirious dreams. Of course, encountering a bird that’s eluded you over the years requires an abundance of both skill and luck.
During the early 1990s, rumours surrounding the occurrence of a few Egyptian Geese in far north-western Germany emerged, the result of an increasing and spreading Dutch feral population. Of course, our imagination did not incorporate the Egyptian Goose. Of course I considered it to have been blown there from the Netherlands.
Eventually, of course, the wild turkeys in the entire Eastern region of the US were mostly or entirely wiped out, and it may well be that European stocks contributed to the reintroduction of Turkeys in the New World. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well.
Of course, when kitties are suffering they usually hide so that's profoundly unrealistic. And last night, a veterinary surgeon-friend of mine asked for help regarding ferals, and I believe today we are signing up a colony about five miles from me with 50 (!) Hmm--that's an interesting one. cats, many of whom are pregnant.
Most birders would guess the village name has something to do with pigeons and doves, and of course it does: “Sainte-Colombe” means “Holy Dove” in French. The estate of Château de Colombe is in the village of Sainte-Colombe, a name it shares with many other places throughout France.
”) We hear Dunn’s musings of the moment as he observes his target hummingbirds–paeans to their beauty of course, but also observations on their behavior, thoughts on their place in our current disruptive environment, worries for their future balanced against the joy and calm Dunn feels in their presence.
It'll be my area's first group dedicated to reducing the feral cat population! And of course, I will use the meetings as an opportunity for vegan outreach. Finally, I was asked to participate in a new TNR group in my town that started largely because of my oodles of questions and setting of policy for Project Treadstone!
They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. The first bustard/korhaan I saw was the endemic Southern Black Korhaan at West Cape NP (called Black Bustard in eBird). I am a birder, after all.
I'd rather trap a feral cat and have her spayed. Or educate my neighbors about the alternatives to poker at the dog track (and of course, about dog racing). Maybe sugar processed with bone char isn't worth boycotting a restaurant over. Maybe it is. Arguing about that line with other vegans, though, doesn't interest me.
She explains complex and sometimes controversial topics including captive breeding, environmental toxins, feral cats and other invasive predators, Hawaiian avian extinction, avian disease, California Condor distribution and history, legal loopholes, and lead poisoning.
But come spring, an even luckier few may even find a fellow survivor of their own kind with whom to start a family, unwittingly causing contentious debates among birders about the countability of established feral populations in the process.
I say “luck” because there is a problem with predation by feral cats and it really is beyond their control as it were. Between the beach and the dunes there are no end of tracks and of course they all head in the same direction. The first clutch of eggs were first observed on June 11th and were predated a few days later.
I wrote about atheism, diabetes (which I do think is important and stay tuned for a video about canine diabetes and how to test blood sugar), dog food, feral cats, and of course, greyhound racing. But, probably because I was blogging daily and there wasn't great fodder daily, I expanded into other areas. I was all over the place.
