I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s. Most of the chapters are in the first two sections; the future is a brief, open question.

Doesn't it just tell us to kill them all?" When Jesus died on the cross, He didn't just save us humans—He died for the animals, too. Lambs, goats, birds were sacrificed at home, at temples and on altars themselves. The animals took the place of humans. Sadly, this kind of reaction is not uncommon.

Tibbles did contribute, but it was a population of feral cats that did the bulk of the killing. The wren’s existence as known to humans was all too brief.
