Spotlight: Lisa Beth Acton, Raising Ravens

This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting. She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

They are, of course, a smaller more compact goose, but picking out the various distinguishing features (such as the yellow eye ring) at such range is invariably challenging, to say the least. One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed. Often the best clue is counting the flock.

Hornbills of Sabah

The latter is even captured in a somewhat gruesome video , in which the hornbill plucks a caged bird out of its cage and kills and eats it. At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. Of course, their own mother is not the only threat to Wreathed Hornbill individuals.
