Getting intimate with a species over the course of the breeding cycle is one of the more rewarding aspects of birding, and field research too. Over the course of three months of field work I monitored dozens of parrotlet nests from start to finish, taking care to snap some pictures now and again.
A number of research projects have sought to determine if some of these human brain abilities are found in other animals. And most recently, a team of researchers from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Austria have demonstrated that New Caledonian Crows understand UCAs. But that’s another story. Here’s the idea.
Taking morphological measurements from a foliage-gleaner The Asociacion Fauna Forever and Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity (CORBIDI), two Peruvian not-for-profit conservation organisations, are proud to announce the next set of Bird Ringing Forever courses to be held in June and November in the rainforests of Tambopata, Amazonian Peru.
Daniel Engber, senior editor at Slate , has posted the first of a five-part series about animals used for research. A Dalmatian, stolen and sold for research, she was likely terrified and probably in enormous pain when she was killed, a couple of weeks after she was taken. Pepper was a beloved family pet.
There is also a research institute dedicated to wilderness: the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute is an interagency facility located at the University of Montana. It is the only federal research group dedicated to studies needed to manage the National Wilderness Preservation System.
I asked Virginia Guhin, Education Programs Coordinator of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ES NERR). Supporting NERR sites like Elkhorn Slough means protecting these incredible landscapes for the public’s education and, of course, native wildlife. “What’s that?”
Whittaker’s adventures in olfactory research take unexpected turns into genetics, chemistry, and the halls of academia. ” (p. There’s also roller derby stuff. It’s taken a critical mass of women scientists to be heard and to be respected.
Feel free to insert your own French joke here (though of course in the US, restaurants now serve Freedom Frogs rather than French Frogs). The breeding ecology of the Yellow-bellied Warbler was actually studied exactly here at Nonggang in 2019 by 3 Chinese researchers. This included recording a total of 77,760 minutes of video.
It describes a Spanish researcher’s finding that Great Spotted Cuckoos somewhat make up for their brood-parasitism habit. Of course, it doesn’t protect the nestmates from competing with the baby cuckoos’ voracious appetites, especially when predators aren’t much of a threat , but you can’t win ‘em all.
Of course, the events are geared to professional ornithologists, so the material can be technical and assume a background in the subject. But I also dabbled in topics such as Snowy Owl eruptions, urban ornithology, window strikes, and eBird (of course). by Eliza M.
I could go on and on, it’s that kind of a book—a comprehensive treatment of a species we respect and adore, based on the most current research, written in a style that, while factual, is from the author’s viewpoint, flavoring facts with a witty, observant personal quality. Mitochondrial DNA analysis strikes again.
I have always assumed that scientific researchers can overlay weather information on checklists for their research, but absent manual entry, that such information would not be available to me. Of course, I eventually figured out it was the weather – there had been a series of snowstorms that had brought in all the grassland birds.
This research suggests that the boom isn’t due to an influx of newcomers, but rather because more local birds are flourishing and successfully rearing families. Specifically, researchers found that in EAB-infested areas, the birds preferred ash trees to other trees, and seemed to favor the ashes with the most severe damage.
The actual Terra device–weatherproof, of course–includes two microphones, a radio receiver, and a bluetooth transceiver to deliver on a tasty set of features: Stream live audio from the yard to speakers or headphones with the included app. Help identify the birds and animals in your yard with sound detection and analysis.
” A group of nine researchers published a paper titled “Exploring the fecal microbiome of the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea)” Makes you wonder what they talked about during their lunch breaks. This is particularly interesting as newish research indicates that Common and Hoary Redpolls are actually the same species.
TV Broadcast Advertising Drives 60% of Viewers to Research Online TV has the Furthest Reach According to a study by TVB , TV broadcast advertising has the highest reach of all ad types. TVB says that 60% of consumers over the age of 18 go to the internet to do research on products and services they see promoted on broadcast TV ads.
Of course, this may seem to be a great honor but would lose its luster if just any site was included in the Library’s Web Archives. Still, don’t expect to find our blog in the Library’s archives too soon: The Library will make this collection available to researchers at Library facilities and by special arrangement.
Over the course of 30 years, the researchers collected all the road-killed swallows they encountered while doing their other research. The research on these swallows involved mist netting, a technique for safely collecting wild birds for measurement or banding and release. When a car comes along they fly away.
Though spring migration is only just starting to ramp up there, of course I had to visit the Ramble. Not only was it pleasure, it was now that most dignified of activities, Research. The Magic Hedge in Chicago, of course. Plum Beach in Brooklyn. And my favorite, the iconic Ramble itself.
Traditionally, of course, falcons have been classified with other diurnal raptors, parrots have been positioned between doves and cuckoos, and seriemas have been lumped with cranes, rails, and other birds in the order Gruiformes. Then of course there are the wood-warblers, carnivores after a fashion but without any of the heavy equipment.
Once a body of research was established and the bird was declared endangered, it took many more years of experimentation, political maneuvering, conflicts with the National Guard, and some tragic fires to establish what is now acclaimed as a model conservation project. Now there are volunteer guides, tours and a local festival.
But as Bill Bryson notes, he did make one great contribution to the world (beyond his anatomical contributions of course), his reconceptualisation of museums from places only of research to places of research and public entertainment and education.
Finally, I was forced to do actual research. Of course, the term dates from the 1870s, when many things were not cool. ” I didn’t know, so I made the obvious American Woodcock joke and the world kept turning. But the question has continued to haunt me. It’s just that simple. Either way, not cool, guys!
The first half describes the problem (why birds hit windows, the scale of the deaths, scientific research, what happens when birds strike windows) and the second half discusses what to do about it (community and worldwide education, window deterrent solutions, legal mandates and building codes, citizen science–what individuals can do).
Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. In the winters the snow lies heavy and researchers travel in and out by small plane.
I speak of flight, of course. Research into bird origins provides a premier example of how paleontological and neontological data can interact to reveal the complexity of major innovations, to answer key evolutionary questions, and to lead to new research directions. This is a key feature of birds.
And apart from local people, primate researchers sometimes spot it, but it is a species seen by fewer than ten living birders. His employers were magnanimous in granting him time to research what was to be his magnum opus, published over the course of 20 years – the four-part Birds of the Belgian Congo.
”) We hear Dunn’s musings of the moment as he observes his target hummingbirds–paeans to their beauty of course, but also observations on their behavior, thoughts on their place in our current disruptive environment, worries for their future balanced against the joy and calm Dunn feels in their presence. Donsker, D.;
Although the MBTA’s prohibitions are broad, there are many exceptions, including “take” for scientific research. FWS argued that the proposed “taking” of Barred Owls fell within this scientific research exception and, therefore, did not violate the MBTA. The environmental groups appealed to the U.S.
Of course, the Red-billed Leiothrix is a species native to Sichuan – in Britain, it is now discussed whether to regard it as an invasive species ( source ). eBird admits that the black chin of the Black-chinned Yuhina is “not very noticeable” But it is a cute bird. In one group, they added a blue egg to their nests.
Of course, I jest a bit in the above paragraph because as a sometime New Jersey birder I have birded the Delaware Bay and seen sights such as the memorable image below, in which thousands of Red Knots, Dunlins, and Short-billed Dowitchers fly up as if connected telepathically. The visual beauty and textual facts are a strong combination.
Originally found in Europe, the Italian Wall Lizard was shown in a research study to be a species that evolved rapidly when it was genetically isolated, and it would be interesting to see if the American population has developed any morphological differences.
Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish. This is not something I needed to tell you but there is some new research. From Science Daily : Crows have the brain power to solve higher-order, relational-matching tasks, and they can do so spontaneously, according to new research.
There’s been some interesting bird research lately, having to do with the origin of birds ( new analysis of new and old fossils ) and the overarching taxonomy ( using DNA analysis ) but I’ve not had a chance to absorb this weighty new knowledge so I’ll probably write about it next month.
Think twice, and do some research. If the birds are not banded, there’s no way to tell if they were released at a ceremony or if they’re racing contest pigeons who went off course (the racers who fly in homing contests are another whole subject). White doves: symbols of love, commitment, peace, hope, etc. This is an important question.
Of course Africa could not to be left out of the pink weekend so I have researched all African species whose official or alternative names include the word “pink”. Of course not! There are certainly some stunners involved. Pink-throated Twinspot. Why would we bother with such an esoteric topic?
Kaufman says he worked on this book for five years and it shows in the depth of research, scope of topic, and the elegance of his writing. And, of course, 18th-and 19th-century naturalists did not have our optics and communication technologies. It’s not always a straight line to the answer.
Research - Knowing what birds are expected when and exactly what their field marks are will make it that much easier to identify them at several hundred yards with a scope turned up to 40X. Of course, I am sure that I have missed some other pointers for those who want to get better at seawatching. a better seawatcher. Southwest winds?
Motomco also makes “Jaguar” and “Tomcat,” complete with cat icons, of course. Researchers have also found that bobcats and mountain lions exposed to diphacinone and other first generation anticoagulants have an increased susceptibility to mange —to the point where it has caused serious illness and death.
Barker, and Carroll Henderson is a well-researched, copiously illustrated, engaging study of bird feeding practices, personalities, inventions marketing, and companies that developed in the United States from the late 19th century to the present day, with a little bit of Canada, Europe, and South America thrown in. Baicich, Margaret A.
This would be a night drive, cold, dark, uncomfortable seats, loud engine in the giant 26-seater truck, scanning the brush and the roadside with three or four strong spotlights wrangled by volunteers among the nature-loving tourists, and of course, the headlights of the truck. And, of course, something interesting came along.
Birders who submit their checklists to Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird likely know that their data may be used to conduct scientific research on subjects such as migration, changes in range, or assessment of populations. I emailed the authors and asked about their research and their use of eBird data.
